JR East Railways unveil new luxury train

Tom Unwin

Regular readers of the blog will know I featured a piece on a new luxury train tour that will open in India, and it seems this isn’t the only new luxury train to be launched this decade.

JR East Railways recently released information and images on what is being billed as the future of train travel in Japan. Cruise Train has been designed by renowned automobile designer Ken Okuyama and boasts some revolutionary features that provide the ultimate in seven-star super luxurious travel.

The new train will have 10 carriages, that can run on both electric and non-electric rails, including two observation areas and huge glass walls so passengers can enjoy the landscape, with two observation decks situated at the front and back of the train making the track visible.

The train has more than just fantastic viewing opportunities, holding a maximum of 34 passengers; the Cruise Train will have 10 carriages made up of five suites, one deluxe suite, a dining car and lounge. The deluxe suite will be a two storey car, complete with two beds on the lower floor, a private bathroom and lounge area.

The price to travel aboard the train has not been announced, but designer Okuyama claims the train will allow passengers to “enjoy the flow of time and space”.
