Archipelago Cruises: A Cruise Of A Different Nature

By Sean Mahon

Based in the quaint village of Ucluelet on the rugged west coast of British Colombia’s Vancouver Island, Archipelago Cruises specialise in wildlife tours that explore the nearby Broken Group Islands. As part of the Pacific Rim National Park, it is a protected area of over one hundred islands of rugged, awe-inspiring landforms.
Utilising their superb facilities and the experiences of a lifetime at sea, the husband and wife team provide unique and unforgettable excursions to this remote haven for pacific wildlife.

The Boat & Crew
With more than 30 years of experience navigating the west coast of Canada by boat, husband and wife Alan and Toddy Landry are well qualified to provide travellers with an informative, relaxing and comfortable tour of the Broken Group Islands. They live aboard the 53 foot motor yacht “Raincoast Maiden,” and you are welcomed into their home as guests. Their long history in the area as commercial fishermen gives them inside knowledge into the locations, habits and activities of the abundant wildlife.

With capacity for 23 passengers, the boat can accommodate solo travellers, parties and families alike. It can be chartered for private events such as weddings and birthdays. The Raincoast Maiden has a selection of local beer, wines and champagne aboard. With 360 degree views from the salon, and huge amounts of viewing space on the upper and lower decks, travellers can be sure that they won’t miss an inch of the epic west coast vista.  With its state- of-the-art hydraulic stabilisers, the yacht is very steady, making for a smooth ride and a steady platform for photography.

Cruises
The Broken Group Island Wildlife Cruise is a five and one half hour expedition into the archipelago, bringing guests close to many spectacular coastal sights. While animals do come and go with the seasons in the Pacific, there is such a variety in this area that travellers will always see abundant wild life.

Those that call this area home are humpback whales, gray whales, orcas, sea otters, seals, California sea lions,
Stellar sea lions, harbor porpoises, black bears, bald eagles, and many species of sea birds. Aside from the indigenous wildlife, the uninhabited archipelago is a picture of tranquillity, silent forests and rugged islands. Enjoying a delicious gourmet meal while anchored in a quiet cove is an option that most guests take advantage of.
