Welcome To Cancun

Welcome To Cancun

By Josh Hill

The most eastern point of Mexico and bordered by the Caribbean Sea, this vibrant city is a popular destination for those who want to combine the best of a beautiful tropical location with unrivalled and unabashed hedonism.  With its bright and modern outlook, Cancun provides the Caribbean setting without the lazy, laid back approach to life – this popular holiday destination is constantly pulsating with vivacious energy.

With mile after mile of pristine golden sand, wonderful opportunities for watersports, (home to the world’s second largest barrier reef, Cancun was surely made for scuba divers) a sultry nightlife scene and a dizzying array of excellent resorts, restaurants and activities to tempt pleasure seekers, Cancun is the perfect playground for those used to the finer things in life.  But is hard to believe that this decadent destination began life as a small, unassuming fishing village; prior to the 1970s, this small corner of Mexico was largely overlooked.  However, a period of investment and re-development heralded in an age of radical transformation; with the intention to rival Acapulco (Mexico’s original ‘party town’.) This was undoubtedly an ambitious plan, but the completion of the Playa Blanca Hotel (now Temptation Resort) cemented Cancun’s status as a destination for the elite.

Best Beaches
From Cancun to Tulum and in between, this stretch of coast is a true haven for beach lovers.  There is a beach to suit every need or personality; from lazy stretches of white sand to intriguing outcroppings and unusual inlets, the diverse qualities of Cancun’s beach scene will make it difficult for you to pick your favourite.

Snorkelling and Diving
Beaches bordered by the Caribbean Sea will undoubtedly offer unrivalled opportunities for snorkelling and diving.  Punta Nizuc is home to many of the town’s most glamorous resorts and hotels.  It also boasts an incredible lagoon and the Banderas and El Bajito coral reefs, ensuring it is just as popular with divers as it is the rich and famous.  These reefs are part of the Great Mesoamerican Reef; the world’s second largest, it provides shelter for a diverse array of marine life, including manta rays, barracuda – and even sharks.

Half Moon Beach is the perfect beach to indulge in a spot of snorkelling.  The small inlet is protected from harsh seas and thus is rich in coral and sea life; snorkelers won’t need to swim too far out of their depth to catch a tantalising glimpse of turtles and barracuda, not to mention scores of inquisitive, colourful schools of fish.  The beach itself is quiet and relaxing, though an abundance of coral washed up to shore means it is not ideal for sunbathing.

Sunbathing
Not everyone will visit Cancun with thrilling watersport action in mind.  Luckily for those visitors, Cancun was made for glorious beach days, and Playa Tortuga is one of Cancun’s most popular beaches.  It is particular favourite amongst families, as the shallow waters offer safer conditions for younger swimmers.  The beach is lined with restaurants and cafes, allowing visitors to relax with a cool drink in hand and watch the world go by.  If you’re tempted to take a dip, a long pier that stretches out into the ocean might be a little too enticing to resist!

Playa de Carmen epitomises laid back chic.  Stretching along the Riviera Maya, it is often packed with tourists and locals alike; lounge chairs, umbrellas, entertainment and even waiter service routinely draws in the crowds.  The perfect place to enjoy a picnic as the sun goes down, this beach resounds with a hip, fresh and friendly attitude.

Unusual Beaches
For those who want a beach with a difference, Tulum Ruins Beach will sate your curious nature.  After hiking through the jungle and uncovering an ancient walled city, beach goers will find themselves suddenly perched on the edge of a stunning cliff.  A steep staircase winds down the cliff face and leads to an expanse of the softest sand imaginable – the perfect place to connect with both nature and history.

Punta Bete will capture your desire to escape from the world.  A secret hideaway tucked between Playa de Carmen and Puerto Morelos, this tiny slice of paradise is in direct contrast with the chic yet heaving beach resorts that surround it.  Quiet, unassuming, but absolutely breathtakingly beautiful, an afternoon at Punta Beta will enable you to live out all your secret castaway fantasies and take a breather from the nonstop action of Cancun.

The Maroma Riviera
White sand, crystal clear waters and a tranquil atmosphere – few visitors are surprised to learn that the Maroma Riviera is considered one of the best beaches in the entire world, and a range of tantalising activities will make sure each visitor experiences the very best of this beach front paradise.

ATV's & Speed Boats
If you want an adrenaline rush then this tour is just for you.  Enjoy a perfect, fun filled day on land and water – this activity takes place on the beautiful beach of Maroma in the Mayan Riviera, considered to be one of the most beaches in the world.  Take to your ATV or speedboat (available for single or double riders) and bounce along the waves in blissful abandon.  After the refreshing and exciting experience, enjoy delicious snacks of fried beans, tortilla chips and soft drinks.

Sport Fishing
If you like to fish then you’ll love the vast variety of marine life that the Mexican Caribbean has to offer.  The Yucatan Channel in particular is a favourite amongst fishers, as it serves as the excellent habitat of many different species.  Cancun and the surrounding areas offer many different types of fishing: open sea, shared, with fly, with light equipment and more.  Embark a fascinating excursion of sport fishing in the Mexican Caribbean, one of the most famous tourists activities known worldwide that can be enjoyed all year long.

Parasail
Admire all of the Maroma Riviera from an incredible vantage point high in the sky.  A parachute fixed to the back of a speed boat will launch you high into the air; hover over the turquoise waters and gaze down at the beautiful scenery below you.  Utilising the most up to date and safe equipment and professional, experienced guides, clients can enjoy the thrill of flying in paradise.  Snacks, taxes and medical insurance are all included, though it is recommended clients bring a change of clothes in case they get splashed!

Sunset Dinner Cruise
The Riviera does not simply lend itself to thrilling opportunities – it is also the perfect setting for romance.  The Sunset Dinner Cruise is the perfect way to add a little magic and romance to your trip.  Board the dinner cruise at the beautiful Maroma Beach just before the sun begins to sink beneath the ocean, and enjoy a leisurely cruise along the coast, lost in each other’s company and the beauty of the evening.  Dinner will be served on the beach – enjoy local delicacies such as Caribbean lobster, steak or surf & turf and sparkling wine – before dancing the night away.

Swim with Whale Sharks
The whale shark is one of Cancun’s most famous residents, and now you have the chance to swim with these gentle giants of the underwater world.  The largest fish in the world, (they are called ‘whales’ simply on account of their sheer size) they can grow up to 40 feet in length and weigh up to 15 tons.  Despite their colossal bulk however, there are inquisitive and friendly creatures and highly receptive to human divers.

Whale sharks migrate to the Yucatan Peninsula during the summer season to feast on the abundance of tiny fish and plankton that gather in great schools near the water’s surface.  An extremely popular tourist attraction, it is now your turn to get up close and personal with these incredible beasts.  On a trip to Contoy Island (one of the most beautiful destinations along the Peninsula) visitors can enjoy snorkelling alongside the whale sharks as they feed and socialise in the warm waters.  You may even be one of the lucky ones who can get close enough to feel their rough skill and share a bond that spans oceans.

Your incredible experience will begin with a pick up from your hotel to Puerto Juarez; here, you will embark on a boat trip (accompanied by a professional bilingual guide)  to the common whale shark feeding grounds – keep a sharp look out and have your camera at the ready for your first glimpse! Once the whale sharks are in your sights, slip beneath the depths of the ocean and snorkel alongside these incredible creatures; extremely friendly and inquisitive, they will happily share the waters with you and prove to be excellent company!

As an extra bonus, you’ll also have the chance to catch a glimpse of some incredible marine species such as dolphins, manta rays, and turtles.  Bird lovers are such to appreciate the opportunity to spot rare and beautiful species as the boat passes by Contoy Nature Reserve, whilst keen swimmers will simply delight in the chance to snorkel in a pristine coral reef.  The experience includes snorkel equipment, a light breakfast, lunch and water, soft drinks and juices.  Each group is limited to ten participants, to ensure every snorkeler has the experience of a lifetime.

An Island Paradise
Just off the coast of Mexico lies a small Caribbean island characterised by beautiful nature and a simple, traditional way of life.  Isla Cozumel is one of the premier diving and snorkelling destinations in the western hemisphere, but aside from a vibrant underwater world and a myriad of dive shops and schools it is also home to a fascinating history.

The Maya were believed to have first settled in Cozumel in the first millennium AD, although older Pre-Classic Olmec artefacts have been uncovered on the island.  Cozumel was sacred to Ix Chel, the Maya Mood Goddess, and the temples were places of pilgrimage, especially for women who desired children.  Although the majority of Maya ruins have been destroyed, there still exist some fascinating examples from the Post-Classic period; the San Gervasio archaeological site is a particular favourite amongst history lovers.

The west of the island has seen a period of rapid development; the main tourist hub is centred around the town of San Miguel, home to many resorts, bars, restaurants, tour companies and watersports opportunities.  However, the east of the island remains wonderfully underdeveloped – rent a car or opt for a tour that will take you deep into the heart of traditional island living.  Here you will find secluded beaches, local restaurants and incredibly friendly islanders who will welcome you with open arms.

Cozumel’s Most Complete Island Tour
With Jeep Wrangler, you’ll see more in one day than other visitors see in a lifetime.  This is the perfect opportunity for those staying in Cancun who wish to enjoy a day trip with a difference; your jeep tour expedition begins with a pick up from Cozumel’s Pier (hourly ferries cross from the mainland at Playa del Carmen to the island) and the first part of your adventure will capture the true splendour of the Caribbean Sea.  Your first stop is in Chankanaab Park, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy the sea lions show, a dolphin presentation and the chance to meet the manatees.

After a snorkelling session it is time to leave the underwater world behind and instead uncover the intriguing Mayan culture; the Pre-Hispanic show will introduce you to a range of fascinating artefacts and replicas from different Mexican cultures.  Enjoy a quick lunch in the park before journeying on to El Mirador, a stunning beach that looks out over dramatic rock formations.  After stopping to take a few incredible photos, your all-encompassing tour of Cozumel will end at the Hacienda Antigua tequila factory.  Learn more about the famed Mexican liquor and gain an in-depth understanding of the distillation process before returning all too soon down town to take a ferry back to the mainland.
