Athens Luxury Lifestyles: Where to Eat, Sleep & Drink

By Laura Blake

The breathtaking city of Athens is famous for many things, most notably the Acropolis, the host city of the modern and ancient Olympic games and the birthplace of geniuses such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle.  Modern day Greece calls Athens its capital and it is known as the’ Glorious City’, for reasons that are not difficult to fathom.  Surrounded by four large mountains and boasting a mixture of both traditional and contemporary architecture, Athens is like nowhere else on earth.

Where to Eat

Greek food is obviously of a Mediterranean variety, but with some interesting little quirks unique to the country.  Athens' proximity to the coast means visitors can expect to find an abundance of seafood on offer, as well as the cheeses and olives typical of a Greek table.  As with other countries in the region, the citizens of Athens tend to have light breakfast and a late lunch, whilst dinner can start as late as 10 pm.

The best place to sample Athenian culinary delights is Keramikos, in the heart of Athens.  Restaurants are so plentiful here that you will almost be overwhelmed by the choices available.  But if you only choose to dine in one restaurant in Athens, make it Funky Gourmet, located on Paramithias Street and Salaminos.  Proud owner of several awards, this little gem is famous for its quality of presentation, matched only by the flavour the chefs effortlessly extract from local produce.  With a stunning attention to detail, this restaurant has gained consistent reviews for its value and service.

Where to Sleep

The perfect hotel is one in close proximity to everything Athens has to offer, but peaceful enough to offer a good night's sleep.  Such places can be hard to find, but the region of Plaka in central Athens has an abundance of places to rest your head, so you can afford to take your time over your choice.  Perhaps the best of these is the AVA Hotel, which is ideally suited to family holidays, couple's getaways and business trips.  Just minutes away from the metro and bus links, you're never far from the action.

The AVA is a four star hotel renowned for its friendly, helpful staff and large, clean rooms.  Some rooms also overlook the Acropolis, an inspiring sight to enjoy over your morning coffee.  The breakfast options are extensive and you can choose to go native if you so wish and enjoy a long, leisurely meal.  Large, comfortable beds will ensure a good night’s rest after a long day of sightseeing.

Where to Drink

As with any capital city, Athens boasts a healthy night life, with bars and clubs especially abundant near the beaches.  There are dozens of night spots just to the south west of Athens, but if you want a particularly sophisticated experience, then head over to Cantina Social, a chic bar that boasts a unique atmosphere and laid back style.  You might have a little trouble finding it, hidden away as it is, but it is worth hunting it down.

Located in the centre of Athens, between the regions of Psirri and Thiseio, Cantina Social celebrates the artistic past of Greece; black and white films are projected onto the walls, whilst a soothing soundtrack creates a relaxing ambience.  Take your drink outside and enjoy the fading sunlight or catch the occasional art and photography exhibitions that take place inside.
