Building Your Home Gym

By Ryan Merrifield

To get the most out of your home workout, you’re going to need a good home gym.  A good home gym can come in a variety of shapes and sizes.  How you design your exercise space and the equipment you choose to buy all depends on your fitness regime and desired goal.  Whatever your preference we have accumulated the essential elements for a well-rounded home gym that you can be proud to call your own.

The Cardiovascular Gym

Treadmill:

If you are more into your cardiovascular activity then a decent treadmill is a requisite.  Choosing a treadmill with an adequate top speed and functionality to match your workout schedule is imperative.  Many treadmills reach a top speed of between 10-20kmph so once your interval training exceeds this speed your options at furthering your goal are more limited.  Additionally a treadmill with a range of advanced programs will make it easier to implement your fitness regime.

Exercise Bike:

Due to the seated nature of exercise bikes you can easily combine your workout with other activities such as reading a book or playing a video game.  Another advantage an exercise bike brings to a gym session is that it places less stress on the joints that some other cardio equipment, significantly reducing the risk of injury.

Elliptical Machines:

Cross trainers serve as an alternative to a treadmill for those with previous knee or leg injuries as well as those who are new to exercise.  If possible, opt for an elliptical with an upper body component to challenge the arms and increase the overall number of calories burned.

Strength & Weight Gym

Multi-Gym:

This all-in-one piece of kit can target a whole range of muscles.  A lat bar and pulley are both great for toned arms and shoulders, while press arms and a pec deck are good for building broad shoulders and working the muscles in your chest.  Additionally, choose a home gym with leg extensions to target your quadriceps, calves, hamstrings and glutes.

Weights Bench:

A vital part of any gym is a quality and solid bench that allows you to do many different exercises.  A good flat bench is great for certain chest, arm and leg exercises, but an adjustable bench is an even better resource to get a well-rounded workout that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to attain with a regular flat bench.

Dumbbells:

From bicep curls and bench presses to goblet squats it is possible to create an entire workout programme around the use of dumbbells.  Taking up little space they are a perfect starting point for your home gym.  Additionally using dumbbells allows you to train one side of your body at a time, which is great for curing any strength imbalances you’ve developed.

Barbells:

While most barbell exercises that can be performed with dumbbells it is still worth stocking both in your home gym.  Barbells are best used for developing dynamic power lifts like the clean or press, because they require the entire body to move as one coordinated unit.  They are also better for performing squats because of the even load across the spine.
