Cooking up a Storm

Cooking up a Storm

By Laura Blake

With the most Michelin starred restaurants in the UK outside of London, Birmingham is quickly establishing itself as a leading destination for cuisine, and on the 3 February, the city’s reputation for excellent gastronomy was surely cemented.  Two Michelin-starred pub restaurateur and TV chef Tom Kerridge joined forces with Glynn Purnell and David Colcombe to celebrate the city’s growing culinary eminence.

Hosting the event at ‘Opus’, found in the city’s Business District, Kerridge brought to Birmingham a taste of Buckinghamshire, serving a range of favourites from his pub, the ‘Hand &Flowers’.  Opened in 2005, the Hand & Flowers is well known for its ‘unpretentious dining’ and seamlessly combines the best produce, rustic French dishes and modern British flavours.  Just a year after opening its doors, the gastro pub gained its first Michelin star.  Fast forward six years, and the establishment was catapulted into culinary history by becoming the first ever pub to be awarded two Michelin stars.

After receiving acknowledgement from across the Atlantic last year, the collaboration with Kerridge is further indication of the thriving culinary scene across the city which continues to receive acclaim. As well as attracting the big names, Birmingham continues to produce its own talented chefs such as Glynn Purnell and David Colcombe.

With such a thriving culinary atmosphere, it seems the rest of the UK is finally sitting up and taking notice of Birmingham; by embracing its new found confidence, there will surely be more opportunities in the future to host such incredible collaborative events.
