Cruise By Cocktails

By Josh Hill

A cruise can offer many advantages, most notably the chance to visit multiple countries and experience a multitude of different cultures in just one trip. Enjoying the local cuisine has always been an excellent way to indulge in local customs, but against the backdrop of your cruise ship in port, perhaps a more authentic experience may be found in the nearest cocktail bars. Highly inventive and reflective of the country of origin, The Luxury Travel Guide offers you the perfect guide to holiday-inspired cocktails.

Mojito, Cuba
Iconic for its flavours of rum, lime and mint, the Mojito is a true cocktail classic. Invented in the 16th Century, this beautiful drink has lasted through the ages and is popular in different parts of the world. While there have been variants developed, the original blend is the perfect accompaniment to a cruise around the Caribbean. With an inviting, sugary hue and a refreshing flavour of lime, mojitos still pack a punch – high quality Caribbean rum is without a doubt the most important component. An interesting and fresh cocktail, a mojito perfectly reflects the vibrant culture of the Caribbean.

Bellini, Italy
Named after a famous Italian painter, the Bellini is a combination of wine and peach purée – a truly decadent taste that will leave you longing for another. The use of wine (which traditionally should be a sparkling white) adds an element of refinery to the fun and fruity peach, creating yet another winning Italian formula – it is hardly surprising that this decadent cocktail originated in Venice, inspired by the grandeur of the floating city. This drink has had variants over the years, but we recommend you stick with the classic recipe for an authentic taste.

White Russian, Russia
The White Russian is famous for its vast quantity in its primary ingredient, vodka. This drink began as a variant of the Black Russian cocktail, with a simple addition of cream to soften the strong flavours from the vodka and, although invented in 1949 White Russians grew in popularity due to its appearance in 1998 cult film The Big Lebowski. Its pure, white colour highlights the unique combination of vodka and cream; add this to the magnificent, historical backdrop of Eastern Europe, the White Russian is the best alcoholic beverage to immerse yourself to Russian tradition.

Hong Kong Dragon, China
An Asian cocktail that is pleasing to both the eye and palate, Hong Kong Dragon gets its interesting name from the elegant decorative top, which resembles the wings of a dragon. This appearance combined with a strong, vibrant colour of yellow makes this cocktail perfect for a night-time cruise around Asian seas. Hong Kong Dragon packs in great flavours with its mix of gin and vodka, along with delicious flavours of orange and lemon. The result is a combination filled with power and fruitiness. For the most authentic Chinese refreshment, Hong Kong Dragon is the only choice.
