Joining a Yacht Club

By Christopher Ford

Joining a yacht club is a great way to quench any travellers thirst for exploration and adventure while also being a unique opportunity to engage in a local community.  Some of the major benefits include mingling with a group of avid enthusiasts, professionals and the chance to socialise with others wishing to learn about the sport of sailing.  There are many organisations to choose from and this guide will help you in determining what to look for when deciding to join a club.

Differences between Yacht Clubs and other organisations

Typically yacht clubs are for people with some existing experience in sailing vessels.  Yacht clubs commonly offer both sail and power, with lessons which cater to the needs boaters may have such as racing but also offering social programs.  If you’re relatively new to sailing and have much to learn a more community based yacht club may be beneficial as a starting place, but check to see what your local yacht club offers first as they may offer training courses, workshops programs or meet ups where you can gain experience.

Which club is best suited for your needs?

You should determine what your goals are before making a decision, as you may be interested in travelling to the Caribbean and find your local club doesn’t offer such an adventure.  You may be more interested in day sailing, or in the racing aspect yachting can provide but whatever your motive, you should make sure your club has options to facilitate your current and future needs.  If you prefer more of a community spirit you should check if your club has frequent events such as lectures from professional sailors or parties and celebrations.

Fees and Waiting Lists

Depending on your location, there may a waiting list due to the popularity of certain yacht clubs and you should check to see if there is one.  Fees vary depending on age; if you’re a youth member then it’s likely you will be able to receive a discount on membership, however check first.  Some yacht clubs may also offer an introductory trial price for new members to gain an experience before making a decision.  It may be advisable to see which of your local yacht clubs offer trial memberships, deciding from there what preferences you have.

Beginner Sailing Tips

There are a number of key rules and tips for safe sailing and avoiding collisions.  Always try to use common sense when there is a risk of collision and when a boat is near or around, be cautious.  If there is a risk of colliding, then whichever boat has a starboard view of another boat (right hand side when facing the front of the boat) must give way and veer left.  When passing through narrow channels it’s advisable to keep towards the edges and typically non commercial powerboats give way to sailboats, unless the sailboat is overtaking as larger vessels may have difficulty changing direction, especially in narrow channels.
