Learning A New Language

Learning A New Language

By Rohini Makwana

Learning a new language can be daunting, but not quite as daunting as finding yourself in a new country and not understanding a word that is being spoken.  Not only will this new skill pleasantly engage you in conversation, you will also discover more about the world you live in.  Nelson Mandela once said “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head.  If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”

Use Technology On The Go

Purchase a CD with your desired language and burn this to your portable device.  This is ideal when you are on the go especially if you are busy.  Listen and repeat what you learn whenever you can.  The internet is also an amazing tool and can be used as an alternative and modern method.  At home, on the go or even on your lunch break you can learn from language websites.  Interactive mobile Applications such as 50 Langu enable you to efficiently learn the language on your smart device with ease.

Spend The Time

This is by far the most crucial thing to do.  The more time you spend immersing in the language, the faster you get results.  This means regularly listening, writing, reading, speaking and studying key words and phrases.  Remember to have breaks as they will make you feel refreshed and enjoy taking in the language to a greater extent.

Reading & Listening

Use guide books or translation websites to read about the things you are listening to.  Create your own vocabulary review.   This will enhance your pronunciation, which is handy in countries that require fluency in order for somebody to understand you; such as India and China. Also, why not buy magazines in subject areas that you are interested in.  If it is something you are already knowledgeable in then you should be able to grasp the context of the topic, while the accompanied pictures often tell the story allowing you to easily fill in the gaps.

Go To The Country

When spending time in the country try and pick up on key words and phrases.  You are likely to see words on objects like road signs and menus and hear them being spoken, amongst other things.  Aim to understand how they are used in a sentence.  You can even try repeating what you have heard.  This technique puts you in the heart of the language and encourages you to learn the real spoken language and not the dictionary definition because when people speak there is a greater frequency to paraphrase or use colloquialisms.

Relax & Enjoy Yourself

Do not worry about not remembering, not yet understanding or having the correct pronunciation because you are still learning and improving.  Learning a language will take time and with practice it will become more natural to you.  So in the mean time just enjoy absorbing what you can and the benefits will soon follow.  This is the strongest guarantee for success.  If you find yourself losing motivation then remember why you started learning the language in the first place and how much your new skill will facilitate you and your company in the long run.
