Luxury Ski Chalets

By Lyndsey Smith

Ski chalets can provide an ideal place for a break but finding the right one in the right location can be difficult.  The chalets in this article show the range of locations, facilities and services that can be enjoyed.

The Lodge – Verbier, Switzerland

Situated high in the Swiss Alps, The Lodge can be found down a quiet road just a five minute walk from the centre of Verbier.  Owned by Richard Branson this chalet seems to offer something for everyone to enjoy, from a private gym to an outdoor skating rink.  The Lodge can sleep up to 18 adults in its nine bedrooms each coming with spectacular views of the valley below.  With the Medran Ski lift station only a couple of hundred metres away there is the option to ski in although, as Verbier is one of the largest ski areas in Switzerland, many trails can be reached by ski lifts in the town centre.  Back at The Lodge a party area provides a bar, DVDs and a karaoke machine giving you a range of entertainment options.  However if it is relaxation you want after a day on the slopes The Lodge also has a spa, steam room and an outdoor hot tub with a chauffeur, chef and butler making sure that your every need is taken care of.

Ferme de Moudon – Les Gets, France

A prize winning restoration a few minutes from Les Gets, Ferme de Moudon is situated in its own private grounds and is one of the best examples of a modern twist on traditional style.  From its beginnings as a 17th century farmhouse, Ferme de Moudon has become a beautifully designed chalet where a largely open plan living area leads out onto an expansive balcony.  From here you will see uninterrupted views of the national park and powder fields, snow capped trees make it look more like a postcard than reality.  The chalet has five bedrooms spread over the four floors each individually designed giving it a more personal feel.  The furniture is either crafted specifically for the chalet or has been adapted to fit in with the overall style.  With two living rooms, a massage room and a Jacuzzi you have the perfect choice for relaxation.  Although in a secluded location Ferme de Moudon is only a three minute chauffeured drive from the heart of Les Gets and the main lift stations.

Belmont Estate – Whistler, Canada

Located in Whistler, British Columbia the Belmont Estate is situated on seven acres of land, with its five en-suite bedrooms and a further two bedrooms in the connecting guest house there is room for up to 14 guests.  Without a ski in option, Belmont Estate goes one step further, with its private helipad just outside the front door you are provided with the option of Heli-skiing in or out of the property.  However if this doesn’t appeal to you the main lift station at Creekside is just a five minute drive away.  With a chauffeur, housekeeper and chalet manager and the choice of having a chef and ski guide, you will have nothing to worry about during your stay and can spend your time enjoying the slopes or just simply relaxing in the heated outdoor pool or marvelling at the beauty of the Rocky Mountains from the terrace.

One Happo – Hakuba, Japan

Lying in the Hakuba Valley and only 100 metres from the main One Happo Resort, this chalet has really made the most of its location.  Large windows showcase the incredible views of the Happo One Mountain, with the 1998 Olympic ski slopes at the front of the property and the Wadano forest towards the back.  This chalet has embraced technology with each room fitted with a wall mounted Control 4 touchpad synched to iPads located around the property.  These enable you to control everything from the blinds to the heating from anywhere in the house.  This hi tech approach is designed not only to give guests a unique experience but to also reduce the carbon footprint of the chalet.  iPhone and iPod docks are also built into the walls of the bedroom eliminating the need for chargers.  Each of the five bedrooms is fitted with a TV that retracts from the ceiling where you can choose from a number of films from the on demand library.  One Happo is not just about the technology however with its wine room featuring over 700 imported wines and a glass topped pool table, the first of its kind to be imported into Japan, One Happo will certainly be an experience to remember.

Top of Mill– Aspen, Colorado

Although incredibly private, Top of Mill is only a short distance from the centre of Aspen and the ski lifts.  The grandeur of this property is emphasised by the scale of the rooms with their high ceilings, wall to ceiling windows and exposed beams and stone.  The living room offers the ultimate comfort with its deep sofas and large fireplace, an antique Steinway piano is a beautiful finishing touch.  All of the bedrooms are en-suite with the main features of the master bedroom being the whirlpool tub and steam shower.  The balconies and terrace allow you to relax with the amazing views of the Aspen Mountain while enjoying wine from the extensive wine cellar.  The home cinema and games room ensures that there will always be something to do after a busy day on the mountains.  There is also a concierge who will always be on hand to assist with your needs with the option of a chef and butler available on request.
