Olympic Roundup

By Rohini Makwana

It was the ultimate event of the year and had us all on the edge of our seats, brought nations together and put sports and the United Kingdom on the map along with securing a place in Olympic history.  Yes, the London 2012 Olympic Games truly were one of the best events to have emerged from the United Kingdom.

In the run-up to the games, the all important historical torch shone a ray of light on all the communities it travelled through.  Consequently it gave people inspiration and more importantly to them, gained their community ’15 minutes of fame.’  From Athens to all the cities and little villages in Britain, the incredible journey of the torch built great anticipation and excitement for audiences around the world and the show got better!

With the elegance and creativity of the illustration on the Industrial Revolution, Britain’s vastly growing music industry and the indisputably breathtaking performances, no wonder the opening ceremony became of one the most acclaimed shows ever to come from an Olympic ceremony.

The reunion of legendary musicians like The Spice Girls andQueen took us back to when we all used to sing and dance along to them in our bedrooms.  As the evening went on, the ceremony was a spectacle of British music and international art as there were superb performances from current British musicians and theatre performers.  In fact the atmosphere was simply electric.  It was a unique and magical event that stylishly combined the best of old Britain with the new, and secured a respective place in Olympic history.

The events were remarkable spectacle themselves as the world’s best athletes competed for that one thing they had strived and yearned so long for; the gold medal.  Usain Bolt raced to the finish line in a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ moment in order to win gold and smash the Olympic record which he had previously set.  Cycling was one of the British public’s favourite sport as Team GB’s cyclists won gold at every opportunity: the women’s pursuit team closing on the Americans in a nail biting final, Laura Trott’s utter mastery of the elimination, not to mention the tears of Chris Hoy but the cherry on top for cycling was Bradley Wiggins speeding past Leon Sanches in the time trial in a triumphant win to gold.

As we drew to a close on the Games the stakes got higher in more thrilling, nail-biting and exciting events.   Top athletes from the best of the Olympic teams pushed their mentality and psychical fitness to their best and who knows what their limits are.  In the end the United Nations proudly took first place with whopping 46 golds, 29 silvers and 29 bronze.

What’s amazing about the Olympics is that it is one of the few times nations can put their differences aside, have fun and compete in friendly games.  Now that the London 2012 Olympic games is over we move into the 2012 Paralympic Games the light is shining on 2014 Olympic Games in Rio-de-Janeiro and there is a lot of anticipation, excitement and expectation already.
