Skiing in Chamonix

One of the great mountain systems in the world is the Alps, stretching from France via Switzerland, Italy and Germany through to Austria the East.  Located on the French-Italian border, Mont Blanc, is the highest mountain in the Alps and is a popular destination for those wishing to pursue the winter sports that including Skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, mountaineering etc.

Of all the resort towns located near Mont Blanc, Chamonix is by far the most popular.  Situated near the peaks of Aiguilles Rouges, Chamonix is the highest commune in France.  The region is popular for activities such as skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing, canoeing, paragliding and even mountain biking.  Chamonix is also famous for its cable cart that leads to the Aiguille du Midi, a mountain that’s part of the Mont Blanc Massif.  The summit of the Aiguille boasts a panoramic viewing platform and a cafe.  The Mont Blanc tramway is another popular attraction of Chamonix; the tramway provides spectacular views of Mont Blanc as well as a number of drop off points for those looking to go hiking and mountaineering.  To top it off Chamonix plays home to the Alpine Museum, filled with exhibitions and artefacts from the Alps as well as a whole section dedicated to skiing.   

Chamonix also has a number of restaurants.  The Café de l’Arve that offers a modern menu and delicious food, for an Asian Fusion dish Alan Peru is certainly unique.  A well kept secret is the Lapin Agile which offers a fine wine collection as well as Italian cuisine.
