The far-reaching influence of the popularity of coffee ensures that all travellers, no matter where in the world they are, can always enjoy a freshly brewed cup. Whether you prefer a black Americano or a caramel macchiato, The Luxury Travel Guide presents the definitive list to the best independent coffee shops around the world.

Le Café Comptoir, Chamonix

Nestled at the bottom of a tricky red run, this ski chalet style café is the perfect place to catch your breath and warm yourself up with a cup of hot coffee after a long day on the slopes.  Located in beautiful Vallorciene, Le Café Comptoir is only a short journey from Chamonix making it the perfect place to meet up, even if not all of your party enjoy skiing.  The setting is what makes this place truly special and with a large outdoor terrace you can sit in the shadow of some of the Alps’ best ski runs enjoying the view and surprisingly even the heat.  Le Café Comptoir also serves some of the best food in the area, and is beautifully decorated inside but sadly this venue no secret so be sure to book ahead of time.

Cielito Querido Café, Mexico City

Cielito prides itself on its unashamedly nationalistic spin on coffee, serving Mexican inspired recipes gathered from across the country and it is this that is setting it apart from other coffee shops.  Cielito is a truly reflection of Mexico City; busy, chaotic and beautiful.  The vibrant retro-chic décor is inspired by Latin American and Mexican design heritage and makes sitting there sipping a coffee, or one of their famous chilli hot chocolates, a pleasure for all the senses.  Cielito Querido do some of the best espresso over ice you will find anywhere as well as traditional snacks like their signature cornbread.  You may struggle to find some coffees you are used to, but this is the place to be for the adventurous coffee connoseur.

Da Matteo Café, Gothenburg

Gothenburg is known for its beautiful architecture and charming café scene, but Da Matteo stands out as exceptional even here.  Originally an Italian inspired espresso bar, now a speciality coffee shop that prides itself on having close personal relationships with the farmers that supply its coffee.  Da Matteo not only sources the best coffee from around the world, it also roasts it on site for the best possible taste, has world class award winning baristas and its own artisan bakery.  Coffee is a social event is Sweden, an excuse to meet up with friends and that’s exactly how you should enjoy one of their sensational coffees; with a good friend after a morning of exploring this beautiful city.

Single Origin Roasters, Sydney

The artsy Surry Hills is an area known for its great coffee shops, but even here Single Origin Roasters stands head and shoulders above the competition.  As the name suggests, Single 0 (as they like to be known) have their own coffee roasting facility, and as well as the coffee they serve in the café they also sell bags of coffee to take home.  The café also serves some fantastic breakfast and lunch options, but for those who want to carry on and explore Sydney there is also a speciality brew bar with coffee to go, complete with milk on tap straight from The Juggler.
