Top Golf Courses- Asia & Australasia

By James Drakeford

Mission Hills - China

Mission Hills is China’s top rated golf and leisure resort, and the world’s largest golf club according to the Guinness World Records. Devoted to the developing game in China, Mission Hills has hosted over 100 major international tournaments since the club held the 41st World Cup of Golf in 1995 – China’s first globally-significant championship. In 2007, Mission Hills signed an unprecedented agreement to host 12 consecutive editions of the Omega World Cup.

Choose from 12 different 18-hole golf courses, each designed by and named after some of the world’s most famous golf stars: Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Ernie Els, Annika Sorenstam, Vijay Singh, Nick Faldo, Jose Marie Olazabal, David Duval, Jumbo Ozaki and renowned golf instructor David Leadbetter.

Tackle the Vijay course, which skilfully incorporates a visually striking 150-yard beach bunkerinto the course. The Pebble Beach bunker sees great stretches of sand run along, and right down, into the water, which makes it one of the most spectacular courses in Asia.

For golfers suffering from jet lag, night golf equipped with floodlights is available until 2am.

THE GOLF CLUB: Mission Hills

An exclusive gated residential community housing a 5-star resort, three world-class spa facilities, four club houses, the Tennis Academy (Asia’s largest tennis centre with 51 courts) and residential developments. The Chartered Diamond Package feature exclusive access to the Pete Dye Course, 15 days advanced booking on tee time, caddie services and shuttle bus service.

WHERE TO STAY: Dongguan Presidential Suite

The Presidential Suite highlights include two living rooms, dining room (with bar), twin massage room, an extensive view of the golf course and an open air Jacuzzi.  Amenities include the Sport & Recreation complex consisting of five zones (Aqua, Sports, Wellness, Recreation and Tracking) offering top of the range facilities for everything from swimming and basketball to a jogging and cycling track.

LOCAL ATTRACTION: Shenzhen Window of the World

Visit the Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty and the Taj Mahal – all in one day. The Shenzhen Window of the World is a theme park consisting of more than 130 replicas of the world’s wonders, historical heritages and famous scenic sites. The entire masterpiece is built at ratios of 1:1, 1:5 or 1:15.

Blue Canyon Golf Club – Thailand

The Blue Canyon Golf Club has made it into this list as much for the magnificent view of the beautiful Phang Nga Mountains and the Anaman Sea as it has for the course itself. Choose between two fantastic 18-hole courses - both cradled in a 720-acre valley, surrounded by freshwater lakes and in harmony with the earth.

The Canyon Course is one of the world’s few remaining purist courses where walking the game, with the Blue Canyon caddies, is as memorable as the shots you will take – over the famous island hole or across the overwhelming canyon hole, the infamous dog-legged Par 4, the single Calabash tree and the fascinating fishing hole.

The Lake Course has nine holes that run through a landscape of lakes and original canyons, whilst the back nine weave around scenic lakes and soft whispering woodlands of rubber trees. Architect Yoshikazu Kato masterfully provided an inspiring alternative to the Canyon course. The greens are much wider here accommodating today’s long hitting professionals, and in fact boast some of the largest greens in Asia.

The Montgomorie Links – Vietnam

The most famous British golfer in recent times has added to his portfolio with a number of high quality personally branded designs. This Vietnam course has joined his acclaimed flagship courses in Dubai, Ireland and Wales.

Located just off the famed Central Coast and minutes from Danang’s international airport, Montgomerie Links has been routed to capitalise on its close proximity to both the warm, tranquil East Sea and striking Marble Mountains – which are clearly visible from various points on the course.

Its signature hole, number 12, is among the best Par 5 in the world. It is extremely well bunkered and requires 3 strategically placed shots to negotiate the 17 bunkers on the hole. Once reaching the green, you will then face an uphill putt.  If you succeed first time, then you have earned that smug look that you are sure to embrace.

Cape Kidnappers Golf Course – New Zealand

Jaw droppingly beautiful. Completed in 2004, this spectacular New Zealand golf course has been hailed as one of the great modern marvels in golf. Cape Kidnappers Golf Course is located on the cliffs, 140 metres above sea level, offering incredible views of the waves far below in Hawke’s Bay.

The land deceptively tilts towards the sea as a series of ridges jutting out towards the edge of the cliffs create an interesting playing field. The surface is firm and fast, the conditions can be windy, and the player who can control his trajectory will be a master of the course. You’ll hit shots over the tops of the trees and play along the edges of deep ravines, and if your incredibly unlucky on the sixth and fifteenth holes it’s possible to pull your approach off the very end of the earth, though it will take nearly 10 seconds of hang time for your ball to reach the ocean below. Cape Kidnappers Golf Course was designed by legendary golf architect Tom Doak and is currently ranked 33rd best golf course in the world by Golf Magazine.
