Weddings & Honeymoons- Indian Ocean Islands

By Sam Lucas

When it comes to organising a wedding, there are countless aggravating and stressful responsibilities to consider.  From locating the perfect venue, to arranging the reception, and the frequent concerns about the weather on the all-important day – these are just a smattering of the issues that infringe on what should be the happiest occasion in your life.  But how can these stressful quandaries be averted?  With a luxurious and exclusive wedding ceremony set in the stunning backdrop of the Indian Ocean, of course.

The islands of the Indian Ocean are an embodiment of opulence and class, with spectacular resorts catering to your every whim; you’ll be indulged with fine food, views and spa treatments, ideal for couples searching for a perfectly personalised and unforgettable experience.  The most popular islands for wedding ceremonies, blessings and receptions include Mauritius, The Maldives, The Seychelles, Zanzibar and Sri Lanka.

Known as ‘the Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, Mauritius is renowned for its palm tree lined beaches, breathtaking lagoons and coral reefs; in other words, a dream wedding location.  This peaceful sanctuary has all the trappings of a perfect island getaway that is also graced with the amenities that go hand-in-hand with life’s sophisticated pleasures.  Mauritius is a cultured, cosmopolitan treasure with a graceful style and some of the finest five star beach hotels in the world.  For a civil ceremony in Mauritius, you only need to be a resident for 24 hours before the wedding.  If you choose to have a religious service, you are required to be a resident for at least one week; not the most stressful environment to organise those final wedding arrangements in.

If white sands, crystal clear waters and tranquil surroundings are things you have dreamed of, then The Maldives is the perfect location for your marriage ceremony.  From palatial resorts to romantic secluded spots on the beach, The Maldives has a little bit of perfection for every couple.  Although you cannot legally get married in The Maldives unless you are a resident, the year-round sunshine and flourishing surroundings provide the perfect destination for you to re-enact the magical moments of your wedding.  It is advised to register your marriage legally at home, and then have the ceremony of your choice in The Maldives.  With its outstanding climate and thrilling activities to experience after your wedding day, The Maldives is also an illustrious honeymoon destination; unwind from the excitement of the big day and enjoy spectacular sunsets with a cocktail or two in a truly romantic setting.

Thanks to its naturally charming and unspoilt surroundings, The Seychelles is a tropical island paradise.  Esteemed for its glorious beaches, The Seychelles offers a dreamy backdrop for an unforgettable, picturesque ceremony.  Those wishing to organise their own wedding must apply to the Seychelles Civil Status Office for a civil ceremony and the relevant church body, and couples must advise the Civil Status Office of their wedding date at least 11 calendar days in advance.  The couple must be present in The Seychelles at least two days prior to the civil ceremony.  Another noteworthy option to consider is having the ceremony and reception on one Seychelles Island, followed by a scenic helicopter hop to another island for your tranquil honeymoon.

For a truly relaxing wedding or honeymoon experience, venture to the island of Zanzibar.  Whether you dream of being treated like royalty, or just long to get away from the stresses of nuptial planning, Zanzibar has something for everyone.  Whether you would prefer a wedding ceremony and honeymoon surrounded by luscious comfort, or a more authentic African experience on the untouched island of Pemba, whatever you’re dreaming of can be turned into a reality.  It is suggested that you or representatives from your chosen venue contact the Government of Zanzibar to discuss the upcoming nuptial.  Civil ceremonies must be held in the morning and on weekdays only.  All documentation for the wedding must be received within the time frame specified and the application letter must be in English and signed by both parties indicating that both applicants are single and want to marry in Zanzibar with the intended date of marriage.  The people of Zanzibar do not take weddings lightly, and endeavour to help each party cherish their special event in any way possible.

Imagine exchanging your vows surrounded by drummers, dancers, singers and elephants in an exotic destination that offers culture as well as beaches.  Sri Lanka provides that opportunity.  With its ancient, mystical cities, thick jungles, miles of palm-fringed beaches, unique culture and hospitable people, Sri Lanka is the perfect location for a distinctive and diverse wedding.  There is a requirement of a minimum period of residency of five days in Sri Lanka prior to the wedding ceremony.  A business visa is now required to marry in Sri Lanka, instead of a normal visitor visa.  Copies of other documents, including your passport and birth certificate, are also required.  Sri Lanka is also a stunning retreat for honeymooners.  With a selection of beach, jungle and safari resorts, it is an exotic preference for the more venturesome couple.

These stunning islands are the ideal destination for a relaxed, picture perfect wedding.  The array of culture and variety that you will experience during your wedding celebration will be treasured forever.  Wherever you choose to tie the knot, you can be sure that this dazzling and impressively unspoilt region will offer so much more than amazing wedding photographs.
