The Future of Television

By Nasareo Lazzaro

The International CES is the world's largest consumer technology tradeshow. This year both Samsung and LG revealed huge OLED TVs which could give us an insight into the future.

Certainly the manufacturers believe this is the way forward as Samsung now looks set to spin off its LCD TV division and concentrate on the super-thin and vibrant displays.

As with many companies operating in the technology sector, Samsung has been heavily affected by the state of the global economy and the huge fall in TV revenue so the restructuring move is seen by many experts as a necessary attempt to improve the manufacturer’s profitability and financial position.

The focus on OLED will certainly be a talking point and is a fascinating technology. It is far superior to any existing technology including LCD, plasma or backlit LED but obviously luxury technology will have a premium price tag.

The  55 inch television that was displayed at the CES is launched later this year.

Keep an eye out for a much wider use of OLED as well. OLED screens are already used in higher-end smartphones and tablets, with signs that this trend is likely to become more significant in coming years.

Donggun Park, head of Samsung’s LCD business, says: “The spin-off will allow us to make quicker business decisions and respond to our clients’ needs more swiftly.”

“Through enhancements in business competitiveness, we will continue to provide superior products and services for the market.”
