A Capital Of Culture- Slovakia

A Capital Of Culture- Slovakia

By Craig Talbot

Formally part of Czechoslovakia before an official spilt in 1993, Slovakia is a young, fresh and exciting country all ready to discover and explore.  Deep rural traditions ooze through the country, and when visiting, it is clear to see why it has become such an extravagant European hot spot.

Bratislava

The city of Bratislava is one of Europe’s most relaxed and peaceful cities.  Stroll lazily down to Bratislava’s famous sophisticated restaurants and traditional bars, all while soaking in the old fashioned charm of the beautiful city.  The hillsides on the edge of the city are home to some of the most underrated vineyards in Europe, and local wine towns let you taste the best that these vineyards have to offer.

River Danube

One of Slovakia’s main assets is the river Danube which stretches through several cities and towns across the country.  Winding past sights such as the Bratislava castle and thehistorical centre of Komárno, the river wonderfully adds to the picturesque views of Slovakia before discharging into the Black Sea.  Several luxury cafes and bars sit alongside the embankment of the river, all providing magnificent views of life on the river.  However the best way to experience the River Danube is to take to it.  Several cruises offer exclusive trips across it and nothing compares to sailing towards Bratislava in the warm Slovakian sun.

Old Town

Old Town is a historic, intimate borough of Bratislavawith a rustic, medieval atmosphere and a long history worthy of discovering.  Steep hills enclose the town and hiking across them showcase the natural phenomenon that they really are.  Old Town also boasts the medieval Bratislava castle which was originally built in the ninth century and dominates the Old Town area; views from the steep steps give an intriguing look onto Old Town and Bratislava.  Classic Old Town can be seen through the many restaurants across the historical streets offering traditional Slovakian cuisine and trendy gourmet meals.

Other cities

Away from the main city of Bratislava, other cities showcase the magnificence and wonder that Slovakia has and are well worth a day trip.  Trencin and Trnava are just a short trip past the river Danube, while for a more glamorous experience the cities of Prague, Budapest and Vienna all celebrate the culture of the area and are all easily accessible.

Trencin

Positioned between tall mountain chains at the foot of the Strazovske vrchy hills is the beautiful scenic city of Trencin.  It has a diverse cultural atmosphere and because of its beauty it has been given the nickname “The Pearl of Povazie”.  The most historic of all of these, is the incredible Trencin Castle, which in its time has welcomed kings and queens from all over Europe and is a real treasure of the city.  Winding cobble stone paths lead to the top of the castle where visitors can get a real picturesque view of Trencin and the surrounding area.  The city is also heralded for its bike trips as they allow you to explore the natural elements such as the picturesque River Vah Valley.

Trnava

A sense of rich personality oozes through the city of Trnava.  Visitors to Trnava get to see a quaint, peaceful place with that special old style charm.  Plenty of historic churches keep the vintage atmosphere of the city while contemporary high street shops and restaurants create a contemporary modern look.  In fact the architecture and scenery alone make Trnava well worth a visit; flourishing trees add life to the imposing buildings which materialise the heritage of the area and give a visual look into the Baroque phase in which this city was created.

Round Up

Slovakia is an exciting and fascinating country that can cater for everyone.  A capital of culture, Slovakia’s rich history is brought into the modern day creating a magnificent place to visit with a variety of things to do alongside a stunning landscape.
