A Different Way to Cruise

Sailing on a traditional cruise ship has become synonymous with a life of luxury. A key branch of the global tourism industry, the majority of luxury cruise ships being built today can comfortably accommodate thousands of passengers and offer out of this world facilities, packed itineraries and lavish holiday experiences. The benefits of enjoying a holiday aboard a cruise ship are obvious, but they are not the only option available for those who wish to take to the high seas. The Luxury Travel Guide explores some of the other unique options available for exploring the globe by sea.

Cruise Europe by Freighter

Although a freight ship might not look as glamorous as a traditional cruising vessel, sailing by freighter offers an enhanced sense of freedom and flexibility to the ardent traveller. In addition, freighter cruises provide access to far flung and remote destinations that may not be reachable by traditional cruise; it is, for example, virtually the only way to traverse the Caspian Sea and a popular option for those with a desire to cross the Black Sea. In addition, freighters can dock for up to 24 hours, allowing for ample time on land.

Freighters are fast, efficient and offer flexible timetables. Typically, guests will sleep in small en suite cabins and have full access to crew facilities, such as a lounge, mess hall or the deck, whilst meals are eaten alongside the crew. Whilst freighters are lacking in the typical activity options available on a large cruise ship, some vessels do have such facilities as sea water pools, saunas, gyms or games rooms.

Small Ships, Big Adventures

For some cruisers, it is the facilities provided on board and not the itinerary which matters. But take a moment to consider the gains should you sacrifice a theatre, surfing simulator or five star spa when you set sail aboard a smaller cruising vessel – rather than on board activities, small ships instead focus on visiting incredible and varied destinations.

On a cruise ship that only accommodates up to 200 passengers, the main entertainment is without a doubt provided by the itinerary. Small cruise ships visit destinations that the larger ships simply cannot reach; off the beaten path ports, remote islands and activities such as kayaking and snorkelling are all designed to help you explore new corners of the world. In addition to taking passengers closer to natural and cultural wonders, they also provide better contact with on-board excursion guides. On these more intimate vessels, accommodations are certainly comfortable, and passengers can enjoy attentive and personal service.

River Cruises – A Floating Hotel

River cruising provides the best of both worlds – explore the mighty rivers of the world in exquisite comfort, without the worry of seasickness! Guests who opt for a river cruise can also enjoy an ever-changing landscape and easy access to beautiful villages and cities; simply stroll off the vessel and immerse yourself in a world of culture, history and sophistication. A river cruise is the perfect option for globetrotters who enjoy the finer things in life who still welcome opportunities to enjoy unique holidays.

Rather than focusing on just the coast, a river cruise allows passengers to see more of a country’s interior, and almost all of the cabins have balconies or outside views. Guests can also enjoy the benefit of only needing to unpack once and a more informal dress code – a river cruise is generally a more laid back and friendly affair. Despite this relaxed setting, guests can still expect luxurious cabins and excellent on-board meals, as a river cruise offers the atmosphere of a decadent, floating hotel.
