A Dramatic Setting: Volcanoes National Park

Even though tourists choose Hawaii as a holiday destination mainly because of its beaches and crisp blue water, unusual opportunities for hiking and camping are offered by the Volcanoes National Park and its dramatic volcanic setting.  Consisting of five volcanoes (two of which still active) the park promises awe-inspiring views and an unforgettable experience!

Loud explosions or geysers of lava are not likely to be heard or seen from the active volcanoes in the park since lava tends to simply lazily flow, slowly making its way to the Pacific Ocean whilst creating new earth.  The world’s most massive sub aerial volcano and single mountain Mauna Loa is located on half of the Big Island’s land mass and last erupted in 1984; conversely, Kilauea is the world’s youngest volcano and one of the most active volcanoes on the planet.

The National Park is home to a wide array of unique flora and fauna that can be closely observed while hiking the various trails.  Walking across a crater and witnessing steaming vistas and large expanses of lava flows that have oozed out of the craters decades ago promise to be an unrivalled adventure.  Make a family trip out of it and consider the option of camping in the park.  Don’t miss visiting the Volcano Observatory where you can closely see the ventatKilauea's summit – night visits guarantee a breathtaking view of red incandescence in the dramatic steam cloud while lava reaches the ocean.
