Pohorje Mountain Range
The Wealth of Biodiversity, Cultural Heritage, Festivals and Delicious Cuisine

Positioned in the centre of the cities Maribor, Dravograd and Slovenske Konjice are the stupendous Pohorje Mountains.  The immaculate landscape is made all the more breathtaking by the Rivers Drava and Mislinja – further enhancing the tranquillity of this unbelievable setting.  Elevated 1,050 metres above the sea, Pohorje comes alive during the summer time; enjoy the fresh air and green forests as you discover the myriad of walking and biking trails (in addition to the sublime mountain spa located in the centre of Bolfenk.)

The Primeval forest Šumik and the pure waters of the Pohorje lakes, along with the thick forests that populate the moors, serve to add majesty to the area; a region that is home to the largest butterfly in Europe and other fascinating animal species.  This grandiose setting also serves as the perfect backdrop to a host of cultural events; the Lent Festival, which takes place on the banks of the River Drava every summer, transforms this peaceful location into a vivacious hotbed of culture.  With over 400 events and half a million visitors, Lent Festival is one of most popular in Europe.

Cuisine is ingrained in the thriving culture of the Pohorje, so tempt your taste buds with something homemade, warm and delicious.  While walking through the area you will come across many traditional restaurants offering original dishes, allowing you to sample the authentic food of the region.   The traditional countryside cuisine is very rich, diverse and, above all, handmade.  Local dishes include “Pohorje pot” – a kind of goulash; Pohorje omelette and a buckwheat porridge with mushroom soup.

Nature Lovers and Sport Fans
See, Listen, Feel and Smell the Natural Park Pohorje

Unspoilt mountain areas and forests offer a well-developed network of roads and paths which lend themselves well for a leisurely stroll or even the challenge of cycling steep inclines – there will be routes and trails to fit all desires.

Along each pathway and around every bend, travellers will uncover a fresh host of natural sights and appealing delights.  Once you reach the summit of the hills and the mountains you will feel as though you have ascended to the top of the world; gaze across emerald green hills and the snow-capped mountains of the Alps, and absorb the inspirational scenery laid out before you.

Covering an expanse of 19 hectares, the Natural Park Pohorje has the perfect topography to cater for all kinds of adventures.  Beech, pine and fir trees have found their secret refuge in amongst the sloping hills and scintillating waterfalls.  Bikers, hikers, runners, skiers, climbers, swimmers and mushroom pickers will each find their sanctuary in the vastness of the Pohorje primeval forest.

While admiring the wonders of nature in the Sumik Primeval Forest Reserve, take a deep breath and let the fresh air invigorate your body and soul; a passing deer or hare or curious fox or black grouse may come your way, allowing you an incredible connection with nature.  Don’t forget to stop and smell the flowers, listen to the harmonious strains of bird song or drink in the scent of the spruce fir forest and feel the overwhelming energy of Mother Nature.

The Villa is only two kilometres away from Bellevue, the biggest ski area in Slovenia, and six kilometres from Areh.  Both ski resorts offer a host of activities to keep your days filled with adventure, such as Alpine skiing, cross country skiing, winter and summer sledding, horse-back riding, hiking and biking.

Green Village

Nature is precious and deserves full attention and understanding.  This is why Villa Ruševec has built a permacultural garden, known as the Green Village.  Permaculture itself is a planned system of sustainable life environment and habitat ‒ by imitating universal laws and principles functioning in nature.  It is a form of establishing balanced environments and relations between ethics, ecology and environment.  Green Village Ruševec allows you to experience nature in all its originality.  This fairy-tale boutique village and Permaculture Circle consists of 10 unique stations.

The stations range from an herbal garden and eco lodges to a traditional Slovenian apiary, all combining to create a serene and ambient nature.  The purpose of the Permaculture Circle is to show guests the laws of nature, help them to understand the importance of nature and its conservation and remind them how nature and its beauty affect us – it is the perfect educational tool to help us understand the delicate balances at work in nature.

Environmental Responsibility

Tourist workers at the Green Village Ruševec feel deeply connected to Pohorje; they are aware of the importance of the environment and therefore ensure to be responsible hosts.  A strong emphasis is placed on offering respect to the environment and making a conscious effort to maintain nature, whilst simultaneously introducing guests to the very best that Pohorje has to offer.

The staff at Ruševec have been working to develop its image, demonstrating its authentic and inviting character.  They are aware that people who work all day and live in a frenzied rhythm of modern times do not seek only rest and “escape” from everyday duties, but are becoming more demanding in a positive sense of the word.  They want something more out of this “escape”, they want real experiences and a possibility to find and show their “right” identity.  And this kind of tourism is perfect for that.

Not only will you have the opportunity to absorb the incredible natural surroundings, each and every walk through Pohorje you will be met by many monuments of cultural heritage that express the creativity and work of man, processes of social development and history of the area.  Monuments of cultural heritage are as picture books that draw the history of people from Pohorje.
