A Unique Wedding in the Ice Hotel

A Unique Wedding in the Ice Hotel

200 km north of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland is an art project turned world-famous hotel.  This inspiring venture is set in the idyllic surroundings of the peaceful town of Jukkasjärvi. 5,000 tons of ice is cut and sculpted every November and December – artists and sculptors reincarnate the breathtaking art of the previous year which is also officially protected.  Examples include Parisian rooftops and the depiction of the universe before the Big Bang – artists from all over the world from different backgrounds and disciplines hand-craft the rooms, suits, the church, hall and bar.

Coupled with the stillness and calm of the town during the winter months, a wedding and a honeymoon is both an unforgettable experience as well as a highly recommended step away from the typical tropical summer weddings you may be thinking of.  A winter wedding at the Ice Hotel would be an altogether breathtaking experience, but the natural surroundings and mystical 24-hour sunlight which take place in the summer and autumn is an excellent alternative if the winter is fully booked.  A countryside wedding in the rustic village church in autumn just as the leaves start to fall, or a ceremony in the summer against the backdrop of cascading colours of red and orange in the magic of the midnight sun ought not to be missed.

A Day with a Difference

Upon its opening on Christmas Day, couples are treated to a bespoke ceremony in the specially designed Ice Church.  Of course, temperatures are low, so guests are encouraged to wear layers and think warm – snowmobile suits or traditional attire is recommended – for the brides, make-up and hair can be done at one of the heated service buildings or one of the warm hotel rooms.  Seating 35-40 people, guests are encased in remarkable patterns of ice and snow on the ceiling and walls.  After the ceremony, guests can indulge in the lavish dinner reception, dining on many courses of traditional Swedish cuisine.

Returning to your luxury suite after an unforgettable day, getting tucked into a warm and cosy polar expedition sleeping bag made for couples and gazing up to the suitably romantic Northern Lights will rank among the best moments of your life.  Guests need not jet off elsewhere for their honeymoon or guest holiday as there are a range of activities and things to do to compliment your wedding.  As a party of guests or as a couple, guests can go on a snowmobile tour of the Northern Lights; the latitude of Kiruna in the winter means that catching a sight of the Northern Lights is extremely likely.  A particularly romantic moment would be the lying down next to a fire watching the glistening stars and moonlight kiss the snow as the Northern Lights dance in the clear night’s sky.   Supplemented by lunch and coffee, guests can also partake in dogsled tours of the untouched wilderness of Jukkasjärvi.
