A Winter in Bavaria

A Winter in Bavaria

The largest state and arguably Germany’s most well known region, Bavaria becomes a snowy mecca once winter descends upon the southern reaches of Germany.  The historic backdrop of Bavaria provides the perfect setting as your slalom your way through snowy alpine peaks or trek through seductive forests.  A magical setting unfolds once the colder months are in full flow and a range of sporting options are available, whether it is skiing, snowboarding or sledding, all of which provide excellent ways to enjoy the fairy tale setting of winter in Bavaria.

The main draw for a winter escape in Bavaria is of course cross country skiing; nothing beats the crisp air of the Alps which reverberates with the gentle hum of the lifts and the blood pumping through your veins.  The Bavarian Alps are home to Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze, which is open for glacier skiing until May.

The pristine pistes here are sometimes referred to as a “Little Canada, such is the quality of the powdery snow on offer.  One of the most sought after destinations is the Bavarian village of Oberstaufen and its excellent off-piste opportunities.  As well as excellent skiing, it also boasts an incredible après ski nightlife with traditional bars serving German favourites of beer and schnapps, to the merry soundtrack of Bavarian folksongs.  There are also some wonderful spa resorts to help you relax and recuperate after a long days ski.

For something truly memorable, take a trip along the Romantic Road.  A 261 mile long scenic drive, it leads from the Franconia wine country to Neuschwanstein in the foothills of the German Alps.  Along the way you will be able enjoy the winter wonderland that is the Bavarian countryside; visit tranquil villages, seek out hidden monasteries, and stay in romantic hotels – the perfect way to end a day in snowy Bavaria.
