Adventure in the Andes

The Andes, the longest continental mountain range in the world and the world’s highest mountain range outside Asia are located on the west coast of South America.  They extend from north to south through a total of seven Latin American countries.  With their snow-capped peaks, awe-inspiring volcanoes, arid deserts, magnificent lakes, native ruins, and ski resorts, the mountain range is undoubtedly a popular tourist destination.  If the vast array of things to see and do makes you wonder where to begin, keep in mind that there is no better starting point for exploration of the natural beauty of the Andes than Chile.

Whether you are staying in the popular northern town of San Pedro de Atacama, in the capital city Santiago or in any of the cosy southern towns of Pucon, Frutillar and Villarica, there is a wide assortment of activities to choose from.  For individuals who seek dynamic adventures, options include trekking or rafting along the wild Maipo River, whilst visitors who prefer to breathe in and enjoy the stunning scenery of the Andes can  embark on a long hike or enjoy horseback riding in one of the many majestic valleys that the mountain range has to offer.

Compared to European resorts, skiing in the Andes is a whole new level –expect steaming or smoking vistas and breathtaking runs that require intense concentration.  The best time to visit (especially for climbers) is from November to March.  Autumn in Chile starts in April when the weather is challenging and trekking is not advisable due to the dangerous viento bianco (white wind).
