An Introduction to Chile

An Introduction to Chile

Chile’s spindly and elongated shape is truly unique, which is befitting as within its borders are a far reaching and diverse geographical layout, such as the driest desert in the world all the way through to enormous glacial fields.  With such dense natural surroundings, there is a wealth of things to absorb and admire no matter what your tastes.

Atacama Desert

Stepping foot in the Atacama Desert is more akin to visiting another planet – the utter silence that dominates this vast expanse is surely one of the most intriguing and bewitching sites that any traveller could ever witness.  The area itself spans for 1,255km and is the driest in the world, but it is soaked in history – take its western edge which is bordered with the 22 million-year-old Salt Mountain range, it sits as a visually stunning piece of nature which has been shaped into wondrous rugged terrain by wind and deposits of volcanic ash.

Amity Tours have developed a new type of hiking tour in the Atacama Desert for people that love walking on the day and rest comfortably at nights in an hotel or hostel in San Pedro de Atacama.  The desert is home to one clearest and purest night skies that there is.  You’ll hike among astonishing landscapes surrounded by volcanoes and secret paths in valleys, salt flats, gorges and learning about Atacama history, culture, archaeology, flora and fauna.  Nothing comes close to the sun setting on the Atacama Desert, tingeing the sky orange creating an almost sepia landscape which will forever stay imprinted on your mind.

Chile Wine

Chile’s unique combination of diverse geographical areas and Mediterranean climate make it ideal for eco-friendly winegrowing and producing a wide variety of wine styles.  Whether it’s coastal cool, altitude with attitude, or just cruising down the centre - Chile’s wine regions have it all.  Chilean wine-making can be traced back to the middle of the 16th century when the Spanish first established vineyards in the South American nation.  The favourable conditions have seen, particularly since 1980’s the wine making industry flourish after Miguel Torres first introduced state of the art technologies such as stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels, to the nation which transformed the vinification processes.

The fantastic wine making conditions are down to the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Andes Mountains to the east making the country a veritable agricultural island, which help protect vineyards - while also allowing them to prosper.  For a week, you can visit diverse wineries and learn about some of Chile’s best red and white wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenére, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Merlot.  Why not even sample selected classic, organic, biodynamic, new and old school wineries, where you’ll tour and enjoy wine tastings with detailed information on the area and wine making.

Hiking Easter Island

Chile is a land of remote wonders and Easter Island is yet another string to its reputable bow, it is one of the most isolated places on the planet, it is home to only 5000 people – over half of those are believed to be indigenous with the rest being Chilean immigrants.  The area is shrouded in mystery and it is alleged that it was uninhabited until around 1500 years ago, when King Hotu Matu’a landed on its shores.  Today many visitors fly to the island to awe over the captivating Moai – the carved stone heads, which survey the coastline.

Easter Island evokes many things but never indifference.  Exciting, it symbolises its people’s mystery and its past which is known by only a few.  This volcanic land, lost in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, hides the most amazing treasures.  Its Moai’s, caves, craters and beaches gives this place a unique atmosphere.  Easter Island is one of the masterpieces of this planet, a magical meeting with the past.
