An Island Paradise- Trinidad & Tobago

An Island Paradise- Trinidad & Tobago

By Mark Johnson

Trinidad and Tobago is a nation consisting primarily of two Caribbean islands just off the northeastern coast of Venezuela.  Like most Caribbean islands, Trinidad and Tobago is vibrant, colourful and packed with energy and culture.  However, unlike its neighbours, tourism is not a major industry.  As a result the unspoilt natural beauty and authentic traditions are still there for all to see.

Beaches

Although Tobago is considered the more attractive prospect to tourists, we prefer the beaches on the more southern island of Trinidad.  Don’t get me wrong, the beaches in Tobago offer serene beauty with the warm Caribbean Sea feels like stepping into a soothing bath.  Trinidad on the other hand is more refreshing and invigorating with bigger waves and stronger current also providing ideal surf conditions.  Our favourite beach can be found on the North coast at Maracas Bay.  The glorious long and wide stretch of powdery white sand is lined with coconut trees and set against a luscious backdrop of dark green mountains.

Turtle Spotting

Get a rare glimpse of an endangered species by taking a turtle spotting or conservation tour of Trinidad and Tobago.  Every year the extraordinary Leatherback sea turtles arrive on land between March and August to lay their eggs while approximately two months later you can witness an even more fascinating spectacle once the eggs have hatched as the baby turtles begin their struggle down towards the sea.  Trinidad’s Mathura Beach and Tobago’s aptly named Turtle Beach are the two best destinations to enjoy this natural phenomenon.

Take a Hike

If you love rainforests and enjoy hiking then Trinidad and Tobago is the place to be.   Bird watchers can catch a glimpse of the endangered Pawi or Piping Guana at Brasso Seco or enjoy the fabulous stalagmites and stalactites at the Aripo Caves.  For an all-round experience, you simply cannot miss the El Tucuche Reserve known as the Northern Sanctuary in Trinidad.  It is the second highest peak in Trinidad and offers an incredibly diverse range of flora and fauna as well as a beautiful collection of streams, silk cotton trees, waterfalls and rivers.

Round Up

With more than enough cultural and ecological landscapes to rival the world famous Amazon and a collection of beaches that would give any other Caribbean country a run for its money, the only question that remains is where you do start?  Trinidad or Tobago.
