Antigua & Barbuda

Antigua & Barbuda

By Mark Johnson

Antigua and Barbuda is the largest of the British Leeward Islands and was once established as Great Britain’s most important Caribbean base.  Now they are the archetype Caribbean Islands offering masses of stunning white sandy beaches and year-round sun for all to enjoy.

Antigua

Revel in the peaceful tranquillity of Antigua’s beautiful beaches by day before embracing the vibrant and lively culture by night.  Relax on the palm-fringed white-sand beaches or go exploring in the glistening crystal clear waters where you will find amazing underwater wildlife.  Swimming, windsurfing, snorkelling and diving are aplenty.

Shirley Heights

The hikes and explorations in Antigua are very rewarding and if you don’t believe me then just take one look at the view from either Monks Hill or Shirley Heights.  The fort at Monk Hill provides an ideal location to sit and enjoy the picturesque setting over the Falmouth Harbour while our favourite spot on the whole island, Shirley Heights, offers breathtaking views far out across the English Harbour.

Barbuda

Very few people live on the island of Barbuda and even fewer people visit.  While this island has very little in terms of facilities and attractions what it does have in abundance is magnificent beaches.  Ringed with miles of beautiful deserted beaches, at times you may find yourself all alone.  Be sure to visit the Pink Sand Beach, stretching across eight miles, the champagne coloured silky sand glows with a gorgeous rose tint thanks to the crushed coral in the mix.

Frigate Bird Sanctuary

Away from the beaches, the best activity in Barbuda is the Frigate Bird Sanctuary in the island’s north-western lagoon.  The sanctuary contains over 170 species of birds and is home to over 5,000 frigate birds.  This bird watchers dream is the largest nesting colony of frigate birds in the whole of the Caribbean.

Round Up

While it may no longer be Britain’s most important Caribbean base, there is a high chance that it may become yours.  Luxuriate in the high-class resorts of Antigua or delight in the pleasures of the deserted beaches of Barbuda.  These are the things that dreams are made of.

Where To Stay: St. James Club Resort and Villas

A lush tropical playground tucked away on a secluded 100-acre peninsula on the south-eastern coast of Antigua, the St. James’ Club Resort & Villas boasts breathtaking ocean views and two white sand beaches along with four swimming pools and on-site activities to keep all age groups entertained.

Where To Eat: Coconut Grove

Coconut Grove is located on the water’s edge at Dickenson Bay, surrounded by palms and lush tropical vegetation.  Sit back and enjoy a candle-lit dinner as the tide washes right up alongside you.  This rustic, open-air restaurant and bar specialise in freshly caught seafood with traditional Caribbean flavour.

What To Do: Antigua Carnival

Caribbean countries love their carnival and Antigua are no exception to the rule.  From late July to early August this entrancing isle celebrates with music, pageants, parades and more at the Recreation Ground in St. John’s.
