Australia: A Tale of Two Cities

Australia: A Tale of Two Cities

Sydney and Melbourne are two of the most exciting destinations in the country – but rivalry is fierce as both cities strive to offer the best tourist experiences.  The time old question of course is which city is better? With both offering a plethora of charming sights and experiences, from excellent sporting opportunities to enchanting cultural offerings, it’s almost impossible to pick a winner.  Still can’t decide which city is the best? Then simply visit both!

Sydney

Found on the stunning coast of New South Wales, Sydney manages to blend an affinity for revelry with an effortlessly hip and laid back atmosphere.  Arguably, no other Australian city compares to Sydney when it comes to making merry – from captivating the attention of the world during the 2000 Olympics to simply lighting up the night sky every New Year’s Eve and Mardi Gras (not to mention the impressive annual festival calendar) the people of Sydney know a thing or two about having a good time.  But it is perhaps the city’s sun kissed beaches that are responsible for drawing the visitors in; a haven for surfers and water sports enthusiasts, beaches such as the legendary Bondi or the more family friendly Manly are routinely packed out year round.  However, it’s not all about surfing and relaxed lifestyles; the oldest and largest city in the country is also home to one of the world’s most iconic views– the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

Melbourne

The title ‘cultural capital of Australia’ might sound clichéd, but there is no better way to describe Melbourne.  This diverse and multicultural city, located on the south coast in Victoria, is filled with gastro pubs and independent cafés, vibrant galleries and art house offerings.  Culture in Melbourne is prevalent in all its facets and can be found at every corner of the city; simply enjoy an afternoon stroll and you’ll soon encounter street art, live performances, trendy jazz bars and pop-up exhibitions.  Its dedication to carefully cultivating and preserving its artistic legacy ensures that Melbourne is always buzzing with activity and innovation; culture here feels organic, rather than forced.  And do not let the variable weather put you off – it just provides the excuse to spend more time in Melbourne’s many excellent restaurants! Whilst a much smaller city than Sydney, Melbourne, with its delightful tram system, Victorian architecture and atmosphere of quiet sophistication, definitely does not sit in Sydney’s shadow.
