Beyond Manhattan

Beyond Manhattan

It is undeniable that New York City’s charm and appeal for tourists is so immense that it creates the illusion that nothing outside of the Big Apple would be even remotely comparable to the unceasing energy and endless diversity that the city offers.  However, in case you eventually tire of the never ending hustle and are looking for a laid-back getaway while in the area – New York State’s got you covered!  With its rich array of culture and history-rich cities mixed with natural beauty, exploring places beyond the iconic avenues of Manhattan guarantees picturesque landscapes and a broader glimpse into American culture.

The Catskill Mountains

Located only 100 miles northwest of NYC and in complete contrast to the concrete jungle, the Catskill Mountain range offers scenic hikes, horseback riding, cycling, and water activities.  This gateway to the mountains provides visitors with much-needed refined relaxation and tranquillity and is the perfect way to unwind from your adrenaline-charged escapades in the city.  Both holidaymakers and New Yorkers are exchanging the NYC’s landscape for a weekend of relaxation in the Catskill counties of Delaware, Sullivan, Greene and Ulster.  Offering luxurious inns with spa facilities, as well as options for camping, low-key family restaurants and cosy cafés, the home of the historical Woodstock Music and Arts Festival is also a popular skiing spot.  Don’t miss taking the lift up Belleayre or Hunter Mountain to fully enjoy the exquisite views and the region’s rugged beauty.

The Hamptons

Dotted with extravagant celebrity-owned houses and located on the eastern end of Long Island, The Hamptons region is one of the most popular seaside resorts in the Northwest and a mandatory summer destination for locals.  Known as a playground for the rich and famous, the area is populated by the rich and famous who “weekend” in their chic mansions or New Yorkers renting more modest houses for the summer.  The villages that form the Hamptons are located close to each other and all offer spectacular beaches, enchanting hotels and inns, high-end restaurants and pulsating night life.  Southampton, East Hampton, Montauk and the rest of the communities across the South Fork provide tourists not only the chance to spot celebrities in their natural habitat, but to also indulge in days of beach fun on the spectacular coasts of the Atlantic Ocean.

Albany

The capital city of the state of New York is a rich in history and culture city and a thriving centre for arts which offers a more laid-back and relaxed vibe than NYC.   The 19th Century chateau-like State Capitol building is an architectural landmark with Renaissance influences that deserves a guided tour through its exquisite chambers.  New York State Museum and the Albany Institute of History and Art hold important heritage displays, including the ‘The World Trade Center: Rescue Recovery Response’ in honour of the police officers, fire fighters and emergency workers who lost their lives on 11 September 2001.  Wander around the administrative buildings of the Empire State Plaza and stop for a coffee on the vibrant Central Avenue or tour the opulent 18th Century mansions – with its fascinating mix of history and urban ambience, Albany is a wonderful alternative to the Big Apple.
