Beyond the Beaches: Subsurface Dive in Fiji

With its white-gold sands, transparent blue seas and permanent sunny skies, Fiji is a place so perfect it almost seems like it couldn't possibly be real. Life on the island demands a slower pace when compared to the hectic hustle and bustle of a major city, and its collection of exquisite beaches, luxuriant interiors and its mesmerising culture doesn't deserve to be rushed in a haphazardly planned holiday.

Fiji is unique having almost as much to do and see underwater as on land; don't let those calm blue waters fool you, there's a riot of sea life bubbling underneath that tranquil surface. A paradise for diver's both experienced and new, the Great Astroblade Reef is the perfect destination for a day trip, with a bounty of diving tours ready to help you take your first plunge.

Subsurface Fiji is the country's number one tour service, having been the recipient of a multitude of awards. Operating on the island for over 25 years, the company offers different packages to suit whatever you wish to gain from your pilgrimage under water – whether you want a calm, relaxing dive discovering the wonders of the inner reefs, or become acquainted with the dolphins and tortoises in dives exploring the outer reefs – Fiji is your playground.

For the more experienced and perhaps slightly more daring diver, Subsurface Fiji's standout tour is one the guides have affectionately dubbed 'the Supermarket'; located just inside the Malolo Barrier Reef, divers are given the opportunity to swim with grey, white and black reef sharks to keep adrenaline pumping, as well as admiring the soft corals and anemones of the area – only 10km (6mi) away from some of Fiji's most popular resorts.

Subsurface Fiji also offers plenty for littler ones, introducing them gradually to the world of diving. Children aged eight and up are invited to join the team with their 'Bubblemaker Experience'; whilst under constant supervision, they learn respect their diving equipment as they take their first few breaths underwater. Once comfortable, the Subsurface team teach kids to play underwater games, before presenting them with a certificate for their efforts.

Visitors to Fiji are unlikely to leave the island without having developed a taste for the isle's warm and welcoming waters; as the ocean waves roll onto the soft sandy beaches, almost as if to beckon you back for another dive, Fiji's vast and expansive coral reefs are ripe for further exploration on your next holiday adventure.
