Bonito Norte Viajes

By Laura Blake

Bonito Norte Viajes is a Spanish travel agency based near the city of Santander, Cantabria. They operate within the north of Spain including Madrid, Castilla y León, La Rioja, Navarra, Aragón and Cataluña, but they specialise in Green Spain; the regions of Cantabria, Galicia, Asturias and Basque Country. It is here that Bonito Norte Viajes have built up their expertise, believing that these unspoiled rural areas are truly the finest regions that Spain has to offer.

The agency is owned and ran by two enthusiastic and enterprising guides; Eva Gómez-Pallete and Hans Eguinoa, who embarked upon an adventure of their own, after gaining 10 years of experience guiding wine and bike tours in Spain, by creating Bonito Norte Viajes.  Their aim was to inspire and enthral visitors by bringing them into contact with the very best that northern Spain has to offer, putting culture lovers in touch with the best local producers, cooks, artists or artisans that can’t be easily reached via modern technology.  All of their partners are experienced, fully committed to their work, art or profession and share their unending passion for the North of Spain.

Bonito Norte Viajes treasure the knowledge they gain by working with locals and tirelessly search for the incredible landscapes, welcoming people, intriguing traditions and hidden secrets of northern Spain, making them valuable travel partners and allowing them to create unique tailor-made trips, unforgettable tours and once in a life time encounters.  This means that they are perfectly placed to help you plan your next trip and transform ideas into an unforgettable city break or country escape.

An Introduction to Green Spain
Bonito Norte Viajes can be considered the experts of ‘Green Spain’.  A direct translation of the Spanish España Verde, Green Spain comprises of the northern regions of Austrias, Basque Country, Cantabria and Galicia, found in between the Bay of Biscay and the Cantabrian Mountains.
The area gets its name from its wet oceanic climate which in turn promotes lush pastures and verdant forests (interestingly, this landscape is similar to that of the UK and Ireland and western France.)

Situated between the sea and the mountains, the regions of Green Spain share many cultural aspects, in addition to fertile terrains and a wetter climate.  With its own sense of cultural identity, Moorish history, unique traditions and a distinct language, Green Spain offers a completely different experience to what one would find just a little further south of the country.  Directly influenced by the geography and cool climate, the local produce of Green Spain is considered some of the best the country has to offer.  From Michelin starred restaurants and cosy bars to vineyards and organic farms, this region of northern Spain is considered a true delight amongst gourmands.

Aside from its excellent cuisine and evocative culture, Green Spain is of course a haven of natural beauty.  Its ambient climate ensures the region is ideal for outdoor pursuits – enjoy the green valleys, explore over.  1.5 kilometres of sandy coastline, discover beautiful nature reserves and indulge in adventure activities amongst the towering mountains.  With Bonito Norte Viajes, travellers will be able to discover the incredible legacy of Green Spain and see Spain through new eyes.

People, Territory & Culture
At the heart of Bontio Norte Viajes is not simply a desire to introduce visitors to the joys of Green Spain.  The company also strive to use tourism as a way to improve the distribution of wealth within their homeland, protect the territory and preserve the cultural diversity.  For without any of this, Green Spain would not be the fascinating and beautiful place that it is today.

Cantabria: the Key to Green Spain
Cantabria is at the heart of Green Spain.  In close proximity to the sea and the mountains, this autonomous community enjoys the best of both worlds, no matter what the season.  Its capital is the port city of Santander, but outside of the city’s elegant limits, Cantabria remains largely underdeveloped (aside from a few high quality resorts) and therein lies its charm The coastline is peppered with beautifully old fashioned seaside towns, shadowy coves and intriguing mountainous trails that lead ardent explorers away from the more populated coastline into the vast and peaceful peaks.  Cantabria is the richest region on the planet for archaeological sites from the Upper Paleolithic period, and also boasts a number of incredible caves, of which the most well-known is the cave of Altamira, famous for its cave paintings that date back to 37,000 BC.

Explore Cantabria Active Tour
Discover Green Spain in the unknown region of Cantabria with Bontio Norte Viajes.  You and your guide will walk the coast line, the green Pasiego Valleys and the impressive Picos de Europa National Park.  You will get to know some of its villages, its people and the most beautiful secret spots.  Your trip begins with three nights in a cosy family hotel in Liérganes where you will spend the days exploring the local area, its villages and its natural wonders, and evenings in the hotel kitchen, learning to cook typical local dishes and desserts.  After these action-packed first days, you will move on to the impressive mountain sceneries at Picos de Europa National Park where you will visit small cheese-producers and wineries to try local specialities.

There’s always a Different Way
The Way of St. James is an excellent way to get to know Green Spain.  The Way of St. James (also known as the Camino de Santiago or the Route of Santiago de Compostela) is the pilgrimage route to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compstela in Galicia, where the remains of the Saint are believed to be buried.  The route traditionally begins in one’s home and takes the form of a spiritual journey for growth and peace.  However, aside from spiritual motivation, it is also an ideal way to become acquainted with the natural beauty of this stunning region.

Bontio Norte Viajes offer three incredible opportunities to get to know The Way of St.  James.  The Camino de Santiago Grand Tourincludes the best of “El Camino” in just a week.  This tour could be likened to a Tapas counter, where you can pick out the best from each region you visit, seeing wineries, fishing villages and some of the most beautiful gems on The Camino to Santiago.  Green Spain is for many an unknown oasis in this dry and sunny country, far from the tourist resorts of the Mediterranean and the food and wine are among the best in the world.  This tour also has a touch of urban chic, beginning in San Sebastian known for its international film and jazz festivals.

In addition, the company also offer bike tours with guided or self-guided options, ensuring you get the most out of your trip along the Way of St. James, as so many of the pilgrims that went before you did.
