City Guide: Kuala Lumpur

By Laura Blake

From its humble beginnings as a Chinese tin mining outpost, Kuala Lumpur has grown rapidly; overcoming gang fighting and British rule to become the vast metropolis of 6.5 million people it is today.  When Malaysia gained independence in 1957, Kuala Lumpur was at the centre of the celebrations, with crowds gathering on the lawns of the prestigious Royal Selangor Club partying and chanting merdeka (freedom) seven times at the stroke of midnight.

Today, Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square) marks this occasion with pride, and is the perfect place to start your visit in Kuala Lumpur.  The Royal Selangor Club itself is also worth investigating, as the membership fee grants you access to some of the finest sports facilities in the city, offering up a range of activities, from cricket, rugby and tennis to aerobics, billiards and a gym.  You may even be able to participate in hashing, an activity that blends running with orienteering, traditionally ending with a celebratory beer.

Another must-see destination in Kuala Lumpur is the Golden Triangle, the modern city centre dominated by the Petronas Twin Towers where you can get stunning views of the city from the world’s highest double-decker bridge, Skybridge.  At the base of the tower, you can find the Suria KLCC, a five-storey mall with a variety of designer label shops and anchored on the Isetan department store.

Kuala Lumpur is also an excellent spot for those looking for a relaxing experience.  Head to the nearby Starhill Gallery mall, where you can find the “Pamper Zone”, an entire floor of spas and beauty parlours guaranteed to meet any taste.  Near to this, you can find the Spa Village, which offers up a variety of relaxation therapies, and is home to the Sensory Room, a unique experience which includes aromatherapy, vibration, natural sounds and a scalp and foot massage.

You may also want to pay the Perdana Botanical Gardens a visit to enjoy a tropical getaway in the middle of a bustling city.  Highlights include the Fernarium and Waterfall which is designed to feel like a mini rainforest, the beautifully-constructed Sunken Garden, and the Deer Park which is home to various species including mousedeer.  For more natural sights, take a trip to the Batu Caves just north of the city, where you’ll find a Hindu shrine complex built into the natural rock.  You may even spot a macaque or two!
