Introducing Budapest

Walk across Chain Bridge where the Baroque, Neoclassical and Art Nouveau buildings of Budapest loom up over the Danube River.  The capital city of Hungary resounds with the romantic spirit of Eastern Europe, and its monuments and most famous tourist landmarks are all within walking distance, making it easy to encompass a thousand years of history in just one day.

Budapest is forged on the strength and beauty of its architectural design, and displays a unique and intriguing blend of old and new.  The Parliament Building, built in the Neo-Gothic style between 1884 and 1904 dominates most views of the river.  Located on the bank of the Danube, it is topped with a resplendent dome that soars 96 metres into the air.  In direct contrast, but no less striking, is the Palace of Arts.  Unveiled in 2005, it demonstrates Budapest’s commitment to forging a future as well as protecting the past.

A sleek towering design, the multifaceted arts complex features soaring glass walls, lofty atriums and an award winning concert hall – a true celebration of Budapest’s burgeoning contemporary arts scene.

The Fascinating Wonders of the Jewish Quarter

More than 200,000 Jews used to inhabit Budapest, according to the official Budapest Tourism Office and approximately one-quarter of the capital city’s population.  As a result, Jews have played an important role in the history of Pest, Buda and Obuda (Old Buda), and after the unification of the previous three, in Budapest’s development.  With Joan VIP you can discover the fascinating wonders of Jewish Budapest on a 3-4 hour tour.

The Jewish Quarter lies within Pest and is situated in District VII, roughly between Kiraly utca and Erzsebet korut in the city centre.  Here you will find many historic and religious sights including the Kazinczy Street Orthodox Synagogue, the Tree of Life monument, the Jewish Museum and the recently established Holocaust Memorial Centre consisting of a synagogue, museum and courtyard dedicated to the Hungarian victims of the Holocaust.

However, the crown-jewel of the Jewish Quarter is the Great Synagogue in Dohany Street.  Built between 1854 and 1859 this beautiful piece of Moorish Revival architecture is the largest synagogue in Europe and the second largest in the world.

The Royal Palace of Gödöllő

The Gödöllő Royal Palace is the largest baroque palace in Hungary and the second largest in the world after Versailles – it truly is a bastion of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Situated 30 kilometres from Budapest, the Gödöllő Royal Palace was constructed between 1735 and 1749 by the prestigious nobleman Count Anthony I. Grassalkovich on the orders of Emperor Maria Theresa and was later frequented by Emperor Francis Joseph I and Queen Elisabeth as a summer residence during the 19th Century.  On a tour of the Royal Palace of Gödöllő, you will receive a glimpse into the Hungarian golden age and discover what the lifestyle of nobility was really like during this period.

As a permanent exhibition of the Gödöllő Royal Palace Museum you can visit the Grand Hall, the renovated Royal Suits and the Queen Elisabeth Memorial Exhibition.  The 26 rooms of the palace are flaunted in white and gold, covered in marble and are decorated with intricate frescoes.  Marvel over the earliest stone theatre with coulisses still standing in Hungary by perusing the Baroque Theatre room, awe over the gilded stucco in the Grand Hall and admire the Habsburg portraits in the Lonyai Room.
