Elegance in Estoril

Elegance in Estoril

By Joe Duffy

Drive west along the coastal road from Lisbon and you will soon happen upon Estroril.  A stretch of coast that runs from Carcavelos to Guincho, it often regarded as one of the most exclusive and luxurious regions in the country.  Much of the area’s cosmopolitan atmosphere and sophistication is said to have been brought about by its importance to the secretive diplomacy and spy rings of the Second World War.  Others argue that Estoril’s rich cultural history derives from its position of strategic importance to the early Roman and Arab empires, and evidence of this can still be seen today in the Roman villas that dot the area.  Wherever Estoril derived its refined and elegant atmosphere from, it has managed to maintain a unique charm that combines luxury accommodation, beautiful natural wonders and enthralling cultural and sporting attractions.

Having been blessed with a typically pleasant southern European climate and a geography that just begs to be explored, the Estoril coastline is the perfect place to enjoy a host of outdoor activities.  First among these is a stroll on Tamariz Beach, a popular destination for those seeking to escape the busy streets of Lisbon during the hot summer months.  Feel the soft sand between your toes and take a dip in the warm Atlantic waters and enjoy a truly fantastic day trip.  The ability to rent sun beds and beach umbrellas helps to enhance the beach’s relaxed environment.

For those seeking a more active and adventurous escape to the Portuguese coast, Estoril offers an amazing range of sporting and outdoor pursuits to fit every taste.  The Estoril Autodrome is a well-established racing circuit that hosts a number of car and motorcycle events throughout the year, and visitors can satisfy their need for speed at one of the circuits many adrenaline fuelled driving experience days.  Golf is also a popular sport in the region, with seven 18-hole courses each offering a different challenge and stunning views along the coastline.  Moving away from the beaches and cliffs and heading northwards, horseback riding is the perfect way to explore the many excellent tracks that wind their way through the regions serene woodland.  Local riding schools offer lessons and treks for visitors of all abilities.

Estoril also offers a cultural heritage that combines historical intrigue and Hollywood-style elegance.  The Estoril Casino is believed to have been the inspiration for Ian Fleming’s James Bond novel Casino Royale, whilst scenes for the film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service were shot in a nearby hotel.  Many museums and palaces are located throughout the area; first among these is the Moghul-inspired Monserrate Palace, the former summer resort of the Portuguese court.  The Cultural Landscape of Sintra is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its European Romantic architecture and a number of parks and gardens that blend local and exotic species of trees.

The Estoril coastline, and in particular its metropolitan gem of Cascais, offers guests an all-encompassing holiday experience: pulses will be raised by the plentiful water sports that are available; sophisticated nights out take in the numerous fine-dining restaurants and vibrant bars of the town centres; and history comes to life in the grand palaces of the Sintra area.  Energy and elegance come naturally to Estoril.
