Hidden Treasure- South Korea

Hidden Treasure- South Korea

By Robert Servant

South Korea is a bustling Asian country blending modern flavours with deep rooted tradition.  Whether it’s skyscrapers towering over shanty towns or fancy boutique shops hiding the discovery of itty bitty shops down the alleys – South Korea is worth the exploration.

Bukchon Village

Bukchon Village is flanked by two palaces – Gyeongbok Palace to the west and Changdeok Palace to the east.  The Gyongboek is the most famous and luxurious of all the royal palaces in South Korea, and this village echoes that sentiment.  With the largest cluster of privately owned traditional Korean houses or hanous in Seoul, it is an aesthetically pleasing site.  The neighbourhood is also peppered with quaint cafes, art galleries and restaurants.  Check out the Art Sonje Centre whose exhibitions have included Andy Warhol and Basquiat.

Shopping in Seoul

Blend the glamour and boutique of South Korea’s retail therapy with a visit to the “big three” shopping complexes in Seoul – Shinsegae, Lotte and Hyundai – and then head down the road to the nearby Namdaemun market.  Seemingly open 24/7 – pick up some inexpensive clothing, fabrics, jewellery, accessories, toys, food and much more.

Bugaksan

Seoul is a mountainous city, but there are no better climbs than the one on offer at Bugaksan.  The peak lies behind the President’s home at Changboek.  Take a hike along the city’s ancient fortress wall to the 342 metre ascent for a spectacular panoramic view of the country capital in all its glory.

Korean Demilitarised Zone

This historical, political and culturally significant boundary between North and South Korea is probably the only place where tourists can view North and South Koreas without hostility.  Established in 1953 after the Korean War, it was agreed that this area would be without any troops which is unique given that the other area separating the two Koreas is the most heavily armed in the world.  This may be the closest you will ever come to seeing North Korea, so it is definitely worth a venture.

Round Up

South Korea is a growing tourist destination for both excursions from Japan and extended vacations.  Use Seoul as your base and then venture around the many other points of interest.
