Horse Riding in Iceland

Horse Riding in Iceland

A horseback ride is one of the best and most authentic ways to properly experience the vast and wild landscapes of Iceland.  This traditional form of transport no longer just offers a practical way to navigate rough terrain; for the modern rider, it offers a unique opportunity to engage with beautiful nature, encouraging you to connect with the silence and serenity of this virtually untouched part of the world.

Íslenski Hesturinn (literally translated to ‘The Icelandic Horse’) is a local family business specialising in horse riding tours in rural Iceland.  Offering daily riding tours from their base in Reykjavik, in addition to multi-day and ‘combination’ tours, they are ready to take you on a moving journey deep into a sublime natural landscape.

Daily Riding Tours in Reykjavik

Íslenski Hesturinn offer twice daily riding tours (departing at 9.30am and 2pm) all year round; enabling visitors to take these stunning landscapes and witness the glory of the changing seasons.  Each tour is led by licensed local guides and expert riders in English, Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian, French and some Swedish.  Despite being within the city limits of Reykjavic, riders will soon feel as though they have been transported into another land; slowly explore the lava fields and admire the mountain views as you move through a land of undulating colours.

Once you’ve gotten comfortable in the saddle, Íslenski Hesturinn will introduce you to the Icelandic horse riding tradition of tӧlting.  Tӧlting is a distinct gait unique to the Icelandic horse that was specifically developed to help them navigate the harsh terrains.  Each tour lasts approximately an hour and a half, with ample time for basic training and safety instruction, allowing you a full experience of this wonderful natural world.

Combination Tours

Further enhance your incredible horse riding experience by selecting one of Íslenski Hesturinn’s bespoke combination tours.  Ideal for those who want to further explore traditional Icelandic culture, or those who simply don’t want their magical experience to end, these tours will relax and inspire in equal measures.

Horses & Spa

The Horses and Spa combination presents a refreshing experience for the body and soul.  Enjoy a morning or afternoon ride before visiting the famed Lauagar Spa.  The perfect way to ease any aches or sore muscles after an invigorating tӧlt across the Icelandic plains; you’ll soon feel revitalised and rested.

Horses & Whale Watching

Experience the beauty of Iceland by land and by sea, and get close to nature’s most majestic creatures.  Your day will begin with a relaxing riding tour towards the popular whale and dolphin watching spot of Faxaflói Bay.  Here, you’ll have the opportunity to admire these graceful animals, and luckily you’ll steal a glimpse of the bay’s resident puffins.

Horses & Healthy Food

As experienced riders may be already be aware, after a thrilling ride you’ll need to replenish your energy levels.  With Íslenski Hesturinn, you can combine exercise with healthy food and enjoy a meal in one of Iceland’s most famous health food restaurants, GLÓ .  Guests have the option to choose between the four dishes of the day, followed by dessert and warming coffee.

Horses & Home Dining

The unique cuisine of Iceland is, much like its horse riding culture, steeped in years of tradition.  For an authentic taste of Iceland, riders can end a bracing ride with a foray into gourmet cuisine – meet with a local chef and embark on a grocery trip to learn about typical Icelandic flavours.  You will be treated to a delicious home cooked meal that features delicious Icelandic delicacies.
