Hotel Endsleigh

By Laura Blake

A stunning Grade I historic house set in 108 acres of magical woodland and beautiful gardens, Hotel Endsleigh promises peaceful surroundings and a truly enchanting stay.  Hidden in a secret valley at the edge of the Dartmoor, Endsleigh evokes the timeless elegance of a Duke's abode harmoniously blended with contemporary touches in Olga Polizzi's declarative style.  Hotel Endsleigh is the perfect escape for a romantic tryst or a short break, a family celebration, or a unique event.

The Story of Endsleigh

Hotel Endsleigh was designed in 1811 by Jeffry Wyatville for the 6th Duke of Bedford.  The Duke, who owned a third of Devon, chose this beautiful spot for his family fishing and hunting lodge.  Today is one of the most beautifully restored Regency country houses to be found in the UK.

The hotel was bought in 2005 by designer and hotelier Olga Polizzi, who carefully set about restoring the house to recapture its Regency atmosphere.  Original furnishings and artworks were seamlessly blended with contemporary luxury touches, to create a hotel that all at once evokes the beauty of Devon and the decadence of Regency England.

Humphry Repton and Endsleigh

In 1814 the great landscape designer Humphry Repton visited Endsleigh.  He spent three days being carried about the grounds in a sedan chair, visualising his plans for the garden and carefully compiling a ‘Red Book’ filled with water colour sketches and his annotations.  This book was presented to the Duke of Bedford who subsequently commissioned Repton to design the garden.  It was to be one of his last ever commissions.

The now famous garden at Endsleigh features many of the landscaping elements for which Repton was known.  Immediately surrounding the house, visitors will find beautifully manicured formal gardens that run down to the River Tamar.  A picturesque dell makes for a wonderful picnicking spot, whilst the arboretum contains a number of rare and unusual trees from around the world.  Extensive woodlands and delightful grottos complete Repton’s incredible vision.

The garden is open to the public every day and host charity events twice a year.  Now celebrating 200 years, the garden at Endsleigh is as delightful and inspiring as it was when Repton first cast his eye over his finished design.

Guest Rooms

Each of Hotel Endsleigh’s 16 rooms have been individually designed with immaculate elegance in mind.  The three Suites all provide comfortable family accommodation, with separate sitting rooms and walk-in showers.  In addition, the thatched Gatekeepers Lodge Suite offers a beautiful private garden and a wood burning stove, radiating a refined and traditional ambience.

The four ‘Spacious’ rooms, with their exquisite garden views, are highly sought after, but the remaining rooms are still in keeping with the beautiful décor; lavishly furnished, several still offer stunning garden views.  The rooms at Hotel Endsleigh are perfect for family holidays and romantic getaways, and well-behaved dogs are also welcome.

Activities at Endsleigh

One of the joys of Hotel Endsleigh is that guests can be as active or as restful as they please.  Those who wish to fully appreciate their glorious surroundings can partake in an afternoon of fishing in the exclusive eight mile stretch of the River Tamar that flows leisurely through the grounds, whilst the more adventurous can enjoy a range of country sporting activities.  4x4 driving, clay pigeon shooting, archery and canoeing are all popular past times – though for something a little different, the Adrenaline Quarry (located 45 minutes away) is home to the longest zip wire in the UK.

Experience the beautiful scenery of nearby Dartmoor with a guided walk or horse ride, explore the neighbouring stately homes or visit the nearby quaint town of Tavistock for an afternoon of shopping at the market.  After a long day exploring, return to the hotel to enjoy a sumptuous afternoon tea in the restaurant before taking a quiet stroll around the garden.
