Hotel Review- NH Belfort - Ghent

by James Drakeford

With its sixteenth century Art Nouveau shell housing luxury modern amenities including a sauna and fitness facilities, the NH Belfort epitomises everything that Ghent represents.  A beautiful, classically designed city which is brimming with tradition and heritage and yet with the largest student population in Belgium and a haven for artistes it is also a brimming contemporary city with a lively buzz.

Allegedly, the NH Belfort Hotel is one star short of the ultimate luxury, however, that does not stop the masses of celebrities flocking here each October for the annual Flanders Film Festival.  The four-star stop over is centrally located in the city centre; within walking distance of the Stadhuis, Belfry of Ghent and St Nicholas’ Church as well as being down the road from the canal with its vast array of quaint bars and exquisite restaurants.

The executive suites are adequately spacious, refreshingly air conditioned and elegantly designed.  The only downside, if you can call it that, is the windows in the room are set high up at a 45-degree angle which means you cannot look out and enjoy the view.  We understand this isn’t the case in all of the rooms, and after all the sights on offer is the main reason why you leave a hotel during the day, not the reason you stay in!

While Belgian waffles wouldn’t normally be consumed for breakfast, it would be sacrilege to visit Ghent and not consume in this sweet delicacy.  With the Belgian waffle maker on offer at the inclusive breakfast, it was all too tempting.  Likewise, the bar, albeit not much of a social hub, provided an ideal waiting room for other guests to arrive as well as an opportunity to sip on a Hoegaarden (Belgian wheat beer) whilst planning your daily itinerary.

Nit-picking for the sake of nit-picking; one amusing little conversation starter was the pictures on the wall alongside the reception desk depicting portraits of the Beatles.  Our understanding was that they look far more like Mick Jagger and the rest of the Rolling Stones (and not even during their heyday!).  With a tremendous series of art instillations, galleries and exhibitions coinciding with the residence of numerous internationally acclaimed artists; all situated within this fascinating city – we recommend that the NH Belfort Hotel leave the art work to the professionals.
