King of the Jungles: The Amazon Basin

King of the Jungles: The Amazon Basin

Covering a little over 40% of South America, Amazonia is among the most bountiful and luscious landscapes on earth.  Spanning across nine separate countries and boasting an incredible mix of nature and civilisation, the region is famed as a top destination for the intrepid tourist.  The Amazon Basin in Ecuador spreads over six provinces and offers holidaymakers the opportunity to not only get close to nature but also to explore the rainforest’s influence on neighbouring cities and towns, which have adapted it into part of daily life.  The basin provides some of the most vivid scenery available in Latin America, a perfect backdrop to an Ecuadorian stay.

Cities Life in the Amazon Basin

The most apparent image that will leap to mind when thinking of the Amazon is that of an untamed, wild rainforest which has remained completely unconquerable.  This image is incorrect however; the Ecuadorian Amazon Basin actually possesses seven major cities which are hugely popular for their ease-of-access to the verdant jungle.  These cities can act as a gateway to sections of the jungle, as with Lago Agrio, or simple quiet cities secluded from more crowded areas, as with the city of Tena which is favoured for its laid back atmosphere.  These cities can also boast stunning natural features of their own – the city Zamora is renowned for its gorgeous waterfalls and colourful birdlife.

Plan Your Stay

Guests visiting the Amazon Basin will find no lack of accommodation options to suit their needs, from luxurious hotels and lavish resorts to quaint jungle lodges, the basin offers a variety of facilities which can be enjoyed by guests.  Hotels offer the comforts of available city life; much more sedate than crowd-prone cities, this means a quiet stay with plenty of access to all the comforts of civilisation.  Conversely, resorts offer a privacy which is attractive to guests who prefer to keep city-life apart from their holiday experience.  The jungle lodge offers a pure, exotic experience, with the sights and sounds of the Amazon a constant feature of the background.

Exploring the Jungle

No trip to the Amazon basin would be complete without actually venturing into the expansive jungle landscape.  Tour guides aplenty can be found in the rainforest’s various settlements, offering tourists an opportunity to get better acquainted with the many species of animals and small tribes which dwell under the forest canopy.  These tours guarantee to enthral and delight visitors, offering an educational and ecologically friendly trip through the incredible landscape, which can comprise roaring waterfalls, open savannahs and the mountainous peaks of the Andes, where trekkers can indulge in unbelievable panoramas of the jungle.
