Lazio the Cradle of the Roman Civilisation

By Tom Patrick

Lazio is a place with a heady mixture of the modern day and the ancient. Centuries old buildings still stand in the capital of the region, Rome, while everything around them has changed.  You can see the coliseum, Vatican City and the Sistine Chapel all within the city limits. But don't make the mistake of thinking this is all Lazio has to offer. When in Rome, you don't have to do as the Romans do. Whether you're interested in the historical or the contemporary, Lazio is bursting with things to do and see.

Head north to Bolsena if you want to meet a real Princess, and take a tour around a place unchanged since the 17th Century. The Vignanello garden is a unique experience,  with a hedge maze hiding a secret. See if you can work it out as the owner herself, Princess Claudia Ruspoli takes you round the labyrinth personally, as well giving a tour of her home, Castello Ruspoli. The personal touch certainly counts for a lot, and this is the perfect excursion if you want to mix a little culture and history.

If you're into a more interested in unwinding than anything else, then Lazio has some of the best spas in Italy. Whether you just want to relax or pamper yourself with beauty treatments, you have the choice of Fiuggi, Viterbo and Tivoli to name a few. These three especially have the added draw of a combination of old fashioned architecture and style, and state of the art facilities.

Other travellers crave an adrenalin rush, and they are well served by Lazio's three premier ski resorts of Terminillo, Leonessa and Arcinazzo. The mountains are breathtaking enough to look at, but just try hurtling down them at high speed for excitement. Any self-respecting aficionado of the slopes won't be able to resist the temptation to carve their niche in the snow and then enjoy a warming drink at one of the resort's stylish bars.

Heading back to Rome, film buffs won't want to miss the Trevi Fountain and Via Vento, made famous in the Italian classic La Dolce Vita. Explore the area's many bars and restaurants, try a glass of Italian wine and enjoy a long lavish meal. By experiencing all of this, you can really get a feel for what modern day Lazio is all about; respecting and preserving the past but living for today.
