Macedonia – The Perfect Contrast between Old and New

Former Yugoslavian state, the Republic of Macedonia is the definition of a traditional Balkan country.  One of Europe’s last undiscovered lands, the country is a wonderful mix between past and present, rural and cosmopolitan, with an all-natural paradise of mountains, lakes and rivers, where, within its idyllic villages and historical ruins, life seems to remain unchanged for centuries.

The contrast between the ancient sites of Heraclea, Stobi, or Prilep and the exciting modern city life make Macedonia a key-destination for over 700,000 tourists per year. During the summer activities such as hiking, biking and climbing in the solated Pelister, Vodno and Moma mountains while inhaling the fresh countryside air or visiting the various Byzantine churches and monasteries, , are the main attractions.  Winter offers skiing at resorts such as Mavrovo and multiple folkloric and cultural festivities found all throughout Macedonia’s typical villages.

Skopje, the Macedonian capital, is there to complete the brilliant contrast between the old-fashioned traditions and the modern urban lifestyle.  The city encompasses a multitude of natural environments and had a continuous metropolitan extension, putting the capital on the fast track for Europe’s most eclectic and entertaining small city.  The ever-changing metropolis has an abundance of museums, bridges, statues and monuments and is the home to the largest cultural institutions of the country.

The statue of Alexander the Great (The Warrior on a Horse), Kale Fortress, Macedonia Square or the Stone Bridge and museums such as Museum of Macedonia, Skopje City Museum, or the Museum of Macedonian Struggle are there to offer an insight into the countries’ passage through history.  On a more entertaining note is The Old Bazaar, crowded with cheerful cafés, breweries, wine bars, clubs and restaurants, which are a major component of the youthful Macedonian modern culture.
