Nature in the Azores

The Azores is comprised of nine tiny havens, surrounded by the crystal clear Atlantic Ocean and is well-known for its thrilling sea activities due to its incredible location.  The sea is rife with a multitude of wildlife, including species of whales, dolphins and turtles; meaning that the Azores provide a wonderful opportunity to get up close to these unique creatures.

Whale-Watching

A popular activity available between the islands of São Miguel and Pico, visitors can go whale watching at any time of the year, as the Azores is located in the migratory paths of many whale species.  However there are particular periods when certain species can be seen more frequently –such as the blue whale in spring time or the sperm whale that’s common between the seasons of spring and autumn.  By taking a small boat tour round the turquoise coastline, you’ll be excited to see what wonderful species you’ll discover; if you’re lucky, a friendly pod of dolphins might also make a welcome appearance.

Swimming with Dolphins

While dolphins can be seen in a boat tour, the islands of São Miguel and Faial provide the exclusive chance to actually swim with these majestic mammals.  Due to the great abundance of the sea life and their curious nature, nature lovers can be guaranteed an unbelievably close, personal view of the dolphins in their underwater habitat.  Visitors may even swim with different species such as bottlenose dolphin and Atlantic spotted dolphin, meaning each experience for them will be astonishing and authentic.  Companies provide experienced crew that will locate the dolphins and aid you in entering and leaving the water.

Turtle Watching

An ancient species that has now been classified as endangered, sea turtles can be found in the Azores waters throughout the year. During their transition from infant to adult, sea turtles follow an ancient migratory path across the Atlantic, spending time in the warm waters of the Azores. Most common species you’ll be able to find are loggerhead turtles and leatherback turtles, and they are often spotted during whale watching tours.  Originally from the American continent, these animals are stunning to look upon as they have unusual characteristics, such as the loggerhead turtle and its unique shell shape.
