OceanEye – See the Azores from a New Perspective

OceanEye was founded with one mission – to organise unique costal trips (with a focus on observing the rich underwater world) around the islands of Faial and Pico, revealing to their guests the incredible secrets of the Azorean Sea.  OceanEye offer an extensive approach to their glass bottom boat tours, not only introducing clients to the marine and coastal charms of the Azores, but placing a great emphasis on conversation and protecting this beautiful environment for future generations to enjoy.  Led by a team of expert marine biologists, sailing experts and passionate locals, OceanEye are ready to take you on a journey that is as educational as it is awe-inspiring.

The Boat

To create the best experiences possible, OceanEye needed a unique vessel.  An innovative design was necessary, not simply for the best views possible of the stunning flora and fauna of the Azores, but to ensure that client safety and satisfaction was always of the utmost importance.

The OceanEye boat is an impressive 9.20 metres in length, ensuring a comfortable but intimate experience.  The vessel is characterised by a concave glass bottom of approximately five metres squared (equipped with underwater lights for incredible night trips) that offers ample viewing of the beautiful underwater world below.  In addition to this observation area, the boat also boasts an exterior deck where clients can leisurely observe the beauty of the coastal landscape as it speeds by.  As a hydrofoil, it is incredibly easy to manoeuvre, resulting in an incredibly smooth ride.  Two crew members will accompany each trip, whilst toilets can also be found on board – in short, OceanEye offer everything you need to discover the many wonders of the Azores.

A Journey of Discovery

OceanEye have crafted a careful route, designed to ensure their guests fully experience the very best of this sublime region.  The tours have been carefully crafted to be both recreational and education, with an emphasis places on the conservation of the beautiful marine biodiversity, in addition to the geological characteristics of this region.

During the trip, clients will be able to observe several fascinating species in their natural habitat, includingAtlantic bonito, damselfish, greater amberjack, guelly jack, moray, parrotfish, yellowmouth barracuda, starfish and sea urchins –just a small example of the vast biodiversity found in these azure waters.

Routes

Monte da Guia and Porto Pim Bay

Located on the south-eastern tip of the Faial Island less than one nautical mile from the Horta marina, Monte da Guia is a peninsula formed by an ancient submerged volcano. The sea bottoms differ widely, including areas of slab, large blocks of rock, vertical walls, caves and sandy bottoms. As a result, this site broadly represents the marine biodiversity of the Azores.

Feteira Islets and Caves

1.5 miles west of the Horta Marina, the Feteira coast was for centuries sculpted by the sea, displaying numerous semi-submerged caves. The translucent waters within these unique geological cavities create illusions in the visitors’ eyes. The sea bottom with white sand is a characteristic of this site and it shelters rays, sole and some marine invertebrates such as whelks and starfish.

Espalamaca

On the edge of Espalamaca you can easily come across to volcanic degasification areas. This area is characterised by intriguing streams of bubbles; this phenomenon is due to micro-cracks in the rocks, allowing the volcanic gases to rise up to the surface of the earth.

Madalena islets

Present a high landscape value, located on the west coast of Pico Island in front of Madalena village. Additionally, they are a refuge area where migratory seabirds nests. The area presents mixed sand and rock sea bottoms, and shelter a rich fauna of resident and pelagic species.
