Off the Eaten Path – Flavors of Paris

The city of Paris is undoubtedly any gourmand’s dream.  Long lauded for its dedication to excellent food and wine, this one city can take its visitors on an incredible journey of flavour, history and sheer decadence.  Flavors of Paris is the perfect option for visitors who long to discover this city through its food.  Providing food loving tourists with informed yet informal visits to some of the best patisseries, cafés, charcuteries and chocolatiers the capital has to offer, a Flavors of Paris tour will delight all the senses, not simply the taste buds.

A Simple Passion

A native Canadian, owner and lead guide Lisa Rankin launched Flavors of Paris in 2011.  Since her childhood she was inexplicably drawn to Paris and French culture – especially the food.  Her love of this sublime cuisine led the development of walking tours around the ‘City of the Light’ with a difference – she focuses on the district of Saint Germain, where food enthusiasts will gain an unprecedented introduction to the ‘behind the scenes’ culinary Paris that the locals themselves esteem.

The walking tours are highly personal, including carefully vetted stops at Paris’ most charming and local food stores.  Rankin browsed and chatted and tasted in dozens of neighbourhood food shops before creating two appetising itineraries that will leave your mouth watering for more.  On the Original Flavors of Paris tour guests sample a variety of sweet and savoury foodstuffs, such as breads, cheeses, pastries, chocolates and, of course, French wine.  For those brought to Paris by a desire to sate a sweet tooth, Flavors of Paris offers the One Sweet Tour; a two hour itinerary where participants can seek out melt in the mouth pastries, chocolates, caramels and other sweet surprises.

These tours are suited to families, couples and individual travellers alike and groups are kept to a maximum of eight participants in order to ensure an intimate atmosphere and a personal experience.  One of the highlights of a FLavors of Paris tour is the opportunity to meet with store owners and learn the stories of their trades.  Flavors of Paris also offers group tours, special tasting events, and tours customised to the clients’ specific interests.

Food beyond Compare

On the three and a half hour Original Flavors of Paris tour, you will stroll around the neighbourhood with a number of the best cafés and delicatessens on your itinerary.  After meeting at the historical Saint-Germain Church (beside the metro stop) you’ll begin your journey of French fare, from the freshly baked baguettes to  velvety chocolates, flavoursome olive oils, expertly aged cheeses, seasonal fruits, smoky meats and gloriously smooth and silky wines to warm your spirit as you continue on your path of gastronomic delight.  Just when you think you could not manage another morsel, you will move onto the next location and be taken over by temptation.  As all tastings are included in the tour, you’ll  be free to indulge to your heart’s content!

The tours vary daily, but at each boutique stop you are guaranteed to encounter some of the very best local cuisine.  With lively historical anecdotes about the quarter’s restaurants and cafes, you’ll soon feel like an honorary native of Saint Germain.

Sweet Sensations

Paris may be home to such savoury delicacies as escargot, frog’s legs and rich and creamy cheeses, but for many the lure of this great city lies in the sweet offerings that have to be tasted to be believed.  Artisan patisseries pile their shops high with beautifully decorated tarts, éclairs and cakes that burst with interesting and innovative flavours and avant-garde adornments.  In Paris, to enjoy a sweet treat is to indulge in luxury.

The natural affection that Flavors of Paris has for the foods of the city really peaks when they’re offered the chance to escort you to some of the hidden treasures of Saint Germain.  On the One Sweet Tour, discover elegant, melt in the mouth pastries, full-bodied chocolates that will warm you from the inside, and homemade strudels – and this is just the beginning.  One particular highlight is the visit to a splendid traditional crêperie, where you can enjoy the house speciality of a crêpe slathered in a homemade salted butter caramel sauce before washing it down with a glass of cider.  Succumb to temptation and lose yourself in the sweet sensations of Paris.
