Shopping in the Bahamas

There is such a vast array of shopping options in the Bahamas, from high end boutiques in opulent shopping centres that offer the latest designer collections to open-air markets where you will be expected to bargain with seasoned and witty Bahamian traders on prices.  The Luxury Travel Guide has explored the three best spots for an extraordinary shopping experience on the islands.

Nassau

The capital of the islands of Bahamas – Nassau is undoubtedly tourists’ favourite shopping location.  The luxurious Crystal Coral Shops provide a blend of World’s best fashion boutiques while visiting the Bay Street Straw Market (which dates back from the 1940s) is a completely different experience. Originally an open-air market that burned down in 2001 and was transformed into a two-story air-conditioned building, the place is famous for the emblematic locally handcrafted straw items such as baskets, hats and mats.  In contrast to the approximately 400 vendors in the Straw Market, Marina Village is a smaller shopping and dining complex where you can also find local artists’ works in one of the few galleries and kiosks.  Make sure not to miss buying souvenirs and gifts from the colourful booths at Festival Place – the official tourism office where you can get to meet and take a photo with a Junkanoo dancer!

Grand Bahama

In addition to its beautiful white sand beaches, Grand Bahama Island is also known for its main three shopping districts and other smaller centres where shopping lovers can buy anything from imported items, to authentic Bahamian goodies and duty-free products.  Port Lucaya Marketplace is a vibrant open-air shopping district where chic designer boutiques and small booths offering handcrafted souvenirs cooperate to create a spirited and vivacious atmosphere.  The place will suit every taste and provide live entertainment and exquisite restaurants overlooking the turquoise green water of the Atlantic Ocean.  Another spot that may be of interest to visitors is Cariloha Freeport situated in the Freeport District where you can browse through an extensive selection of clothing made out of refined bamboo.

Andros

While Nassau and Grand Bahama offer countless shopping opportunities, the island of Andros is famous for specialising in producing the national fabric –the colourful Androsia.  Produced by the Androsia Batik Factory, the fabric has been made on the islands since 1973 and is considered a national treasure.  Each print of the hand-waxed and hand-dyed fabrics is inspired by a natural element found in the Bahamas and typically utilises bright colours (hot pink and purple are particular favourite shades!) patterned with a white print The local crafts are sold in various stores across the island but can be bought directly from The Androsia Batik Factory in Fresh Creek as well.  Every visitor of the home of the unique fabric will be offered a free tour by members of the staff who will gladly explain the different stages of production and the factory’s legacy.
