The City of Ljubljana, Slovenia

The City of Ljubljana, Slovenia

At first glance it may appear that Slovenia, or more to the point, its capital city of Ljubljana doesn’t have much to offer.  The city first appears as a quaint part of European culture, but scratch the surface and you will find more than you could have ever imagined.  Located at the centre of the country, Ljubljana has a population of 300,000 and is one of the smallest capital cities in Europe.  The small population and modest backdrop endear the city to many, simultaneously evoking a spirit of intrigue whilst maintaining a relaxed atmosphere, serving as a welcome respite from that of the major European cities.

Upon visiting Ljubljana you will find there are two very different takes on the city, located to the east and the west of the Ljubljana River.  On the west side you will find the newest and most commercial part of the city, while on the east you will find castle hill, as well as the Mestni and Gornji squares.  Here you will find many of the best shops, cafes and restaurants the city has to offer.  Whilst travelling through the city you will come across several bridges which cross the river, the most iconic being the Triple Bridge, known locally as the “Tromostrovje”.  Built by Joze Plecnik, the Triple Bridge is one of several examples of his influence on the city.

Those travelling with families with families will find Ljubljana particularly appealing.  Tivoli Park, which is located west of the city centre, features many a bench for weary legs to rest upon while the children can amuse themselves at the playground.  A bus service runs to Ljubljana Zoo and tickets can be bought for as little as €8 for an adult.  More adventurous families will want to visit Atlantis, Ljubljana’s premier water park. Atlantis has several themed areas and is home to both indoor and outdoor thermal pools, as well as a dozen relaxing saunas.

With the city being home to 64,000 students, Ljubljana has a thriving youth culture.  In Metelkova City a varied group of cultures and artists gather in the bars, cafes and nightclubs which feature in the area.  Those seeking alternative nightlife should visit the Trnovo District, where you can find the Sax Pub.  The Sax features live jazz on Thursday nights at 9pm, running from August until December.  Beer aficionados can visit the city’s Pivovarna Union Brewery which features tours and insights into the history of the brewery as well as focusing on its impact on the country.  While Sir William’s Pub is home to 120 different beers, as well as multiple teas and wines.
