The Emerald City- Seattle

The Emerald City- Seattle

By Craig Talbot

Nicknamed the Emerald City thanks to its lush evergreen forests, it is perhaps no surprise that Seattle has an abundance of natural beauty.  Mix this with all the advantages of a big city and you have yourself the ideal location for your next vacation.

Downtown

Seattle’s vibrant Downtown district is the place to be.  It is home to fabulous restaurants, active nightlife, world-class shopping and some of the most stunning architecture in the city.  Most of Seattle’s famous icons can also be found here.  Among the highlights are the Pike Place Market for its famous fish market and original Starbucks Coffee shop, the Seattle Waterfront with its Marina, Pier and Aquarium, and the Experience Music Project – a rock & roll museum with a special exhibit chronicling the life and music of rock star, Jimi Hendrix.

The Space Needle

The Space Needle is more famous than all of the other Downtown landmarks combined.  While it may look like a UFO on stilts, many of Seattle’s visitors come to this iconic observation tower for its spectacular panorama of the Downtown Seattle skyline as well as the picturesque view of the surrounding mountains and islands.  The Space Needle features an observation deck at 520 feet, along with a gift shop and rotating SkyCity restaurant.

Mountain Views

Cupped between the snow-capped Olympic Mountains to the west and the volcanic peaks of the Cascade Range to the east – Seattle is blessed with a fabulous backdrop.   Chuck in the 14,411 feet tall Mount Rainier along with the clear waters of Elliott Bay and suddenly it becomes picture-perfect.  Once you have admired the scene from afar, get acquainted with these natural wonders up close.  Explore the breathtaking mountain vistas with Olympic National Parks interesting blend of fauna and flora.  For scenic drives, hikes and mountain climbs visit the Mount Rainier National Park.  Or if skiing is more your thing, take a day trip up to the Cascade Mountains or even stay overnight in a lodge.

Ballard Locks

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, often nicknamed Ballard Locks, was built in 1911 to provide a link for boats between the salt-water of Puget Sound and the fresh water of the Ship Canal – connecting eastward to Lake Union and Lake Washington.  Tourists and locals alike enjoy watching the parade of sailboats, motorboats, tugs, barges and yachts passing through, as the canal locks’ water levels are adjusted to allow their safe passage.  The main highlight is the salmon ladder with a glass panelled viewing gallery below the water line allowing visitors to witness the salmon migration.  Different species enable this spectacle to be enjoyed year-round.
