The Nirwana Bali Golf Club

By Josh Hill

The Nirwana Bali Golf Club’s 18 hole championship course and luxury resort is one of the most picturesque sporting destinations in the world. Located in the Tabanan Regency of Bali, the course is a tasteful mix of historic Asian culture and modern-day finesse. As visitors tee off they will be treated to awe-inspiring panoramic ocean views, traditional Balinese features and verdant greens and gardens. At points the golf course is flanked by working rice paddies, with some of the holes actually being built into the ridged rice terraces distinctive to the area, giving golfers a taste of Bali’s rich heritage of agriculture and a chance to experience a glimpse of everyday working life. When the golf course was first designed by legendary Australian golf professional Greg Norman, he went to great lengths to capture the traditional spirit of the island by adapting the course to its initial landscape, rather than flattening this beautiful corner of Bali.

Other course-side views include the awe-inspiring Tanah Lot Temple, a pilgrimage site built upon a rocky islet which is positioned as the main feature of the course’s “signature” seventh hole. One of seven sea temples on the island of Bali, it has significance both in Balinese mythology and to the many Hindus that reside in Indonesia.  Pilgrims often wade into the sea by the temple and burn copious amounts of incense in and around the monument, giving the wind that blows through seventh hole a rich, mysterious aroma and a vague orange haze.  This makes playing this particular hole a unique and memorable golfing experience, and expert golfer might even be able to make use of the scent of burning spices as a subtle hint of wind speed, intensity and direction.

While much of the rugged southern coast of the Tabanan Regency was previously a lot less well known by visitors to Bali, developments such as Nirwana Bali Golf Club have stirred interest in the area and connected the once-remote Tanah Lot up with the town of Tabanan further to the north. However, the developers of the Nirwana Bali Golf Club have created a resort with such a perfect balance of natural beauty and modern facilities that many golfers choose to extend their visit to Bali and use the resort as a base to explore the beautiful central island region. The 103-hectare Pan Pacific Resort that surrounds the golf course includes villas, swimming pools, spas and restaurants that will suit golfers and holidaymakers alike.
