The Rockies

By Charlotte Postings

The Rocky Mountains are a 3000 mile-long range spanning from the northern edge of British Colombia in Canada right through to New Mexico. As a result of its vast length, various types of climate can be found within the mountains, ranging from the alpine-like nature of the northern American Rockies to the arid conditions experienced at the southern end of the group. The many types of terrain within the Rockies mean that there are a whole host of different activities and sights on offer, ensuring that tourists in the region won’t leave disappointed.

The town of Aspen was formed in 1879 as a place for budding silver miners to live whilst seeking their fortune. However, the surrounding mountains now attract a very different crowd to the area. Aspen ski resort is famous throughout the world as a premier skiing destination, due to its long and illustrious heritage. It hosted the first ever World Championships outside of Europe in 1950, and has evolved into a playground for the rich and famous whilst retaining much of its vintage charm. Those who wish to test themselves on the best ski courses in the world cannot consider their list complete without a trip to this Colorado resort.

Those who prefer heading up mountains to sliding down the side of them will find Mount Elbert to be more to their liking. Based in Colorado, this peak is the highest within the Rockies, measuring at 4,401 metres. Known affectionately as the “gentle giant” of the range, this mountain can be easily climbed by anyone with a reasonable level of fitness, meaning that casual hiking enthusiasts can see the same awe-inspiring views as accomplished mountain-climbers.  With several routes to the summit, ranging in length and difficulty, visitors to the mountain will always be able to find a fresh challenge.

The Rockies run through the world renowned Yellowstone National Park, and under the protection of the National Park Service, various endangered species have been allowed to flourish, including the powerful mountain lion. Feeding off a rich diet of prey, these creatures are best observed at a distance, although there are no documented cases of humans being attacked within Yellowstone.  The recent re-introduction of Wolves mean that guests to the park have various opportunities to see the beautiful savagery in nature in its finest form, making a visit to the park essential for those wishing for an authentic natural experience.
