The Shard- London’s Biggest Attraction

The Shard- London’s Biggest Attraction

By Sean Mahon

Right alongside the Thames stands London’s latest attraction, The Shard.  Poised like a giant dagger of silver that pierces the clouds, it is literally the capital’s biggest attraction.  Dominating the skyline, it stands at 310 metres tall; the dazzling glass exterior of the highest building in Western Europe can be seen for miles around.  Construction began in February 2009 and ‘The View from the Shard’ observation deck has been open since February 2013, offering uninterrupted 360-degree views of the capital, stretching 40 miles in every direction.

Once you arrive in the entrance you are treated to a panel of illustrations which depict famous Londoners, accompanied by famous quotes about the city.  “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”.  So said Samuel Johnson, and a visit to the summit of The Shard is certain to reinvigorate your passion for the capital.

Your thrilling journey to the top of The Shard begins once you step foot through the glass doors and enter the lift, which propels you up the 33rd floor that boasts a number of world class restaurants.  A second lift is waiting to take you to the 68th floor; travelling at a relatively rapid speed of 15 miles per hour, the luxurious experience is heightened by the gentle melody of a specially commissioned track performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and The Joyful Company of Singers.

Once you step out onto to 68th floor, the views that await you are nothing short of breathtaking.  Take in the splendour of the skyline, from Canary Warf to the Houses of Parliament, and every illustrious landmark in between.  Digital telescopes allow visitors to zoom in on particular points of interest and reveal information; with over 200 London attractions to focus on, there is plenty to discover.  Visitors can also opt for night views of the city, to see London from a completely different perspective.

The pièce de résistance of the experience can be found on the 72nd floor.  Standing on open air tip of The Shard is a dramatic way to conclude your visit; lay yourself bare to the exposed city before you and admire London’s exhilarating skyline.
