Time Travel In Old San Juan

Visited by more tourists each year than any other destination in the Caribbean, Old San Juan is the oldest settlement within Puerto Rico and is brimming with traditional value. The island’s capital, San Juan is situated on a narrow island on the north coast and comical and lively, the city offers an unforgettable insight the culture of the Puerto Rican people.
 
The historical charm in this city knows no bounds. Now a thriving residential area, its past derives from a strong military background involving the Spanish fleets. Old San Juan is also home to up to 400 beautiful 16th and 17th Century Spanish Colonial buildings. 
 
La Fortaleza is a 16th Century fortress that allows visitors to explore San Juan’s military heritage. The first of the military facilities constructed in the city, the building became the official Governor's Residence in 1822 and is currently the home of Governor Alejandro García-Padilla.  Home to over 300 years of history, it is now a National Historic Landmark and has also been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Tours are available daily and you can feast your eyes on timeless memorabilia catapulting you back to the city’s decadent past.
 
Casa de los Contrafuertes (House of Buttresses) allows a unique insight into a 18th Century Spanish-style home.  Believed to be the oldest residence of its kind, it is filled with countless artefacts and intricate handmade crafts.  If this does not sustain your need for history, the house also features the Museum of Colonial Architecture and the Museum of the Puerto Rican Family.
 
After a day of discovery, head to one of the various plazas where you can enjoy the vibrant and enticing nightlife.  The city holds various festivals throughout the year, displaying the spectacular Puerto Rican dances and live music.  To explore the past and enjoy cultural enlightening, look no further than Old San Juan.
